International black metal cult Blood Stronghold stream new album

Today, pan-international black metal cult Blood Stronghold stream the entirety of their highly anticipated third album, Spectres of Bloodshed. Set for international release on July 2nd via Nebular Carcoma in conspiracy with Satanik Requiem on vinyl LP format, hear Blood Stronghold‘s Spectres of Bloodshed here:
For the past six years, Blood Stronghold have prolifically pursued their vision of black metal, strongly (and bloodily) rooted in the classic ’90s Polish tradition. A pan-international duo, it’s no surprise that these visions are so stout and solidified: on vocals, guitar, and bass is Nightwolf, who concurrently maintains the esteemed Runespell as well as the much-missed Eternum; and exceedingly busy drummer Krew, who’s played with countless bands but most prominently with Necrostrigis, Ravenmoon Sanctuary, Ordo Sanguinis Noctis, and Starlit Woods. Together as Blood Stronghold, these two scene veterans have created a vast landscape of pure ‘n’ proud Polish-style majesty that mesmerizingly transcends its hardly-disguised foundation.

But, to simply say that Blood Stronghold “only” create vintage Polish black metal is to severly undercut their not-inconsiderable artistry. Witness their latest full-length, Spectres of Bloodshed. With Krew’s drums of war raising the banners before the listener’s very ears, Blood Stronghold waste no time in establishing a grim-yet-splendorous atmosphere, whisking the listener away to forgotten realms and arcane ages. The riffing, in particular – undoubtedly austere, yet strangely inviting in its somber melodicism – opens those portals of the imagination with utterly masterful ease, a veritable symphony of windswept abandon and tragic grandeur that’s seemingly infinite in their resounding textures. Nightwolf’s commanding throat, of course, conveys these tales with hackle-raising authenticity, verily imagining oneself before “Unbowed Wolves” or the “Blood Dawn,” or what horrors arise “From the Depths of Veles Sea.” And Krew’s drumming, as always, is without peer here, guiding every pulse with poignancy and very real humanity; his reliance on tribal rhythms makes Blood Stronghold‘s black metal ever more unique whilst firmly rooted in that richest tradition mentioned earlier.

All too aptly titled, Spectres of Bloodshed is an ominous reflection of an all-too-ancient past. Thankfully, Blood Stronghold remain resolute and continue sharpening their swords, unconcerned with the rabble passing for nowadays “black metal.” Follow their voice of blood, or fall before those swords!

ASTRIFEROUS reveal first track from ME SACO UN OJO debut mini-album

Today, uprising death metal cult Astriferous reveal the new track “Myriad of Grotesquerie.” The track is the first to be revealed from the band’s highly anticipated debut mini-album, The Lower Levels of Sentience, set for international release on August 7th via Me Saco Un Ojo Ojo Records on 12″ vinyl format; Pulverised Records shall be handling the CD version, while Desert Wastelands Productions will handle the tape version.
Hear Astriferous‘ “Myriad of Grotesquerie” here:
Hailing from Costa Rica, Astriferous formed in 2018 and quickly set to work on their first recording. With a couple members concurrently doing time in Bloodsoaked Necrovoid, it’s no surprise that that first Astriferous‘ recording, Raise High the Scepter of Indulgence, was of such exemplary quality. Indeed, from the very beginning was the band’s aesthetic firm and fully formed: utterly gutted, sepulchral Metal of Death betraying an undeniable supernatural aspect.

A live rehearsal followed earlier this year, but at last has Astriferous‘ most ominous strike arrived: the four-song/21-minute The Lower Levels of Sentience. From its title on down to its four component song titles – “Ghost Universe,” “Exercises in Tantric Sorcery,” “Myriad of Grotesquerie,” and especially “Necrohallucination” – it’s immediately apparent the Costa Rican quartet are drawing from a different pool of inspiration for their dread creations. Bleak and bottomless is that abyss, and Astriferous literally drown the listener in death metal molded from grotesque shapes, otherworldly pulses, and hideous energies. Their attack is squarely within pure ‘n’ proud DEATH METAL – churning, caustic, crushing – but sliced and sluiced are frayed threads of blackgrind and the bestial arts, altogether coalescing into a slipstream of sinister atmosphere and boundless morbidity.

Neither resolutely “old school” and far too unclean for the new school, Astriferous are searching for cosmic caverns all their own with The Lower Levels of Sentience.

Cover and tracklisting are as follows:
Tracklisting for Astriferous’ The Lower Levels of Sentience
1. Ghost Universe [4:37]
2. Exercises In Tantric Sorcery [4:34]
3. Myriad Of Grotesquerie [4:20]

CULTUS PROFANO Announce Second Album “Accursed Possession” + Premiere New Track “Cursed in Sin, Op. 25”

Los Angeles-based black metal duo CULTUS PROFANO is proud to announce the impending release of its second blasphemic offering Accursed Possession, due out August 28 via Debemur Morti Productions.
Simultaneously starker and more atmospheric than their 2018 debut Sacramentum Obscurus, the band achieves malefic transcendence without the need for superficial adornments, through a stripped-back, pitch-black palette of elemental guitars, mesmeric percussion and vocal invocations of burning venom.

With the band now a live entity, Accursed Possession invokes a tour-honed alchemy of purpose, vision, and execution. The arcane vibes of those Italian, Greek and other obscure occultists of the second wave are channeled in unison of magick and mysticism, invocation and ritual, and sulphur and mercury.

With supreme focus — and in presence of the serpent — CULTUS PROFANO has conjured an infernal path to perpetual darkness. Mixed and mastered by Rune of StavMix Studios (Whoredom Rife), the album’s cover was painted by Serbian artist Khaos Diktator (DevourmentSaor).

Hidden deep within the darkness, CULTUS PROFANO was formed by Advorsus and Strzyga in 2016 with the impious vision to fulfill a sacrilegious oath in the form of unholy compositions. Now, the devoted heretics ready their second arsenal of sinful chants once again under the banner of Debemur Morti Productions.

Accursed Possession will be released August 28 on CD, 12″ LP, exclusive DMP edition 12″ LP, cassette, and digital. Pre-orders are now available via the label’s EU shopBandcamp, and US shop.

CULTUS PROFANO is:

Strzyga – vocals, guitars
Advorsus – drums, vocals

UADA set release date for new EISENWALD album, reveal first track

Today, Eisenwald sets September 25th as the North American release date for Uada‘s massively anticipated third album, Djinn, on CD and vinyl LP formats.

Since their formation in 2014, Uada‘s rise has been meteoric. Hailing from the Pacific Northwest, the band quietly released their debut album, Devoid of Light, in 2016 through Eisenwald, and word of mouth quickly built from there: here was BLACK METAL writ large, classic and uncompromising but brimming with power, soul, and artistry, and all without bluster and bathos. Uada‘s debut album surely expanded the lexicon of the melodic black metal idiom, and the underground took notice. Two years later came Cult of a Dying Sun, whereby the band further perfected their craft and compellingly took to the stage, their performances garnering as much acclaim as their recordings. During all this, more than the underground started to take notice; the name Uada was on the tongues of folks usually reticent to black metal.

Now, almost effortlessly, Uada fully perfect their craft and deliver their masterwork: Djinn. Simply titled but by no means simple in construction nor execution, Djinn builds upon the increasingly ambitious songwriting of its no-less-considerable predecessor, but pushes their dazzling artistry into nearly Technicolor landscapes of the Beyond. Upon the first opening notes, this boundless artistry is felt: big, rolling rhythms reminiscent of post-punk, tantalizingly setting the stage for the splendorous expanses to follow. There’s a certain magick at play here, no doubt bolstered by the band’s rhythm section of Josiah Babcock (who puts in his final performance here) and new bassist Nate Verschoor, erstwhile mainman of Veiled; this throttling-yet-deft foundation both leads and plays acute counterpoint to the spiraling, windswept riffing of founders Jake Superchi (also vocals) and James Sloan, their guitar work transcending the poignancy of prior works. And indeed, Djinn‘s generous six-song/hour-long runtime no doubt allows the listener the ultimate freedom to roam within Uada‘s ever-unique world, spanning both smothering speed and deliriously dream-like states, Very Metal urgency and textural exploration alike – put simply, the band at the height of their creative powers. Djiin is truly its own realm of experience.

Djinn, first inhabitors of this world, the smokeless fire and those we call upon our enemies, has gifted us a 60-minute descent into the modern-day possessions of our existence and demise,” state the band, “A duality that can only be known as our third wish.”

Graced once again by breathtaking cover art courtesy of the legendary Kris Verwimp, and with imminent touring plans into 2021, Uada shall overtake the throne with Djinn.

CENOTAFIO to release second album on vinyl via BLOOD HARVEST – streaming now

Today, Blood Harvest Records sets September 11th as the international release date for Cenotafio‘s striking second album, Larvae Tedeum Teratos, on vinyl LP format.

Originally released in 2019 on CD and cassette, Larvae Tedeum Teratos saw Cenotafio cement their position as one of Chile’s best new-breed black/death bands – no mean feet, given the rich history of Chilean underground metal and its ever-thriving scene that’s arguably even stronger today. Then again, the duo comprising Cenotafio are no mere newcomers, as both members have been playing in a number of hordes for over a decade, but both together in the esteemed Invehertex…

Nevertheless, as Cenotafio, the duo of drummer/vocalist Patricio Kusnir and guitarist/bassist/vocalist Daniel Hermosilla have created a considerable canon in just five years together. A demo and a couple singles introduced the band initially, but it was 2017’s La fatídica excrecencia de la subtierra debut album which put Cenotafio‘s supremely sepulchral ways on the international metal map. Amazingly, the duo topped that feat with the follow-up Larvae Tedeum Teratos. A more concise but somehow simultaneously more sprawling work, Cenotafio‘s second album spread tendrils of terror and tension across the helpless listener and refused to relent its dread hold. Effortlessly shifting between ripped ‘n’ roiling speed and drowning-in-the-deep doom, Larvae Tedeum Teratos created a horrific world, its ceaselessly humid and punishingly physical soundfield wielded as almost an instrument onto itself. Blackened death metal, deathened black metal, blackdeathdoom, whatever you want to call it: Cenotafio truly arrived with this album.

Fans of the band since the beginning, Blood Harvest is honored to be finally unleashing Cenotafio‘s Larvae Tedeum Teratos on the format it so deserves – vinyl!

DARKENED set release date for EDGED CIRCLE debut album, reveal first track – features members of GRAVE, MEMORIAM, A CANOROUS QUINTET, EXCRUCIATE+++

Today, Edged Circle Productions announces September 11th as the international release date for the highly anticipated debut album of pan-international quintet DarkenedKingdom of Decay.

It was but the summer of 2019 when Darkened burst onto the international stage with their debut EP for Edged CircleInto the Blackness. Although an otherwise-brand-new entity at the time, Darkened boasted a wealth of experience in the death metal underground, comprising drummer Andy Whale (ex-Bolt Thrower / Memoriam), bassist Daryl Kahan (ex-Disma / Funebrarum), vocalist Gord Olson (Ye Goat-Herd Gods / Demisery), and guitarists Linus Nirbrant (A Canorous Quintet / This Ending) and Hempa Brynolfsson (Excruciate / Ordo Inferus). As such, the band’s opening salvo was truly a sum of all its not-inconsiderable parts: all-caps DEATH METAL of a cool and cruising and above all CRUSHING aspect. Unsurprisingly, Into the Blackness garnered widespread acclaim, and heightened anticipation for the band’s inevitable first full-length.

At last, it arrives under the ominous title Kingdom of Decay. Darkened here have undergone a slight lineup shift, with Kahan departing as bassist and Tobias Cristiansson (Grave / ex-Dismember) taking his place – another underground veteran whose presence is perfect for the band’s increasingly confident crush. Everything on Kingdom of Decay is an intensification of that short-but-sweet debut EP: the riffs more patient but punishing, the doom darker and doled out more effectively, the songs more world-eating whilst effectively exploring a greater wealth of dynamics and, it must be said, atmosphere. Elsewhere, the winning formula of Into the Blackness remains largely unchanged – the stately, steely pulse of later Bolt Thrower or the subsequent Memoriam dusted with the classy melodicism of A Canorous Quintet and successors This Ending, but all done with a touch that’s somewhere between comfortably familiar and subtly unique – and you can now also add a touch of the tank-like onslaught of prime Grave, with everything given a gleaming CRUSH courtesy of the mixing by Tobbe Sillman (General Surgery) and mastered by the one and only Dan Swanö (Edge of Sanity) in the famous Unisound Studio in Sweden. This is what debut-album dreams are made of…or nightmares!

Graced with unforgettably austere cover artwork courtesy of Juanjo Castellano Rosado (Unleashed, The Black Dalhia Murder, Gates of Ishtar), Darkened‘s Kingdom of Decay is guaranteed to be one of THE death metal albums of the year. DEATH METAL for death metal maniacs, by death metal maniacs!

LUNAR APPARITIONS to release BAŠMU’s second album on CD – features members of FLEŠŠ+++

Today, Lunar Apparitions, a division of Nebular Carcoma, announces August 6th as the international release date for Bašmu‘s haunting second album, VVitchblood, on CD format.

Bašmu is the sole domain of the mysterious Xülthysy, who’s also insanely prolific across other such projects as Flešš – with whom LUNAR APPARITIONS reissued their debut album and demo on separate A5 digipack editions last year – Chaoist, Drenglyndr, and Girtablullû. Although all but Chaoist are some iteration of black metal, with Bašmu does Xülthysy explore the shimmering shadowself of the most rotten, mildewed depths of the ancient ’90s black metal underground – back when traditional witchcraft, vampirism, blood rites, self-hatred, and generally antisocial behavior were all mandatory. Taken another way, if Flešš is comparable to Belkètre, then Bašmu most definitely would be comparable to Moëvöt.

Indeed, it’s not uncharitable to liken Xülthysy to the works of Vordb Dréagvor Uèzréèvb, the insanely prolific deviant of France’s infamous Black Legions. As such, Bašmu mines equally chilling – and equally stratifying – territory, travelling from dungeonic violence up above to lost-in-the-forest ambience. Originally released in 2017 but only on cassette tape, VVitchblood arguably plunged deepest into this treacherous terrain and most definitely with the most unorthodoxy. Undeniably raw, there exists a concertedly detailed soundfield utilizing, paradoxically, the sparsest palette. Each note is where it needs to be, hovering and anguished and unearthly, and others comes in when ready and melt into further reverberations. Xülthysy spares no weapon in his quest for medieval ruination and rancor; FX pedals are applied liberally to guitars and vocals, malforming both into new (and more horrifying) manifestations, while the synth/organ work here will unnerve even the steeliest of constitutions. VVitchblood undoubtedly bears strong resemblance to black metal “back in the day,” but its atonal ‘n’ atagonistic aspect puts it into a realm all its own…and one perpendicular (rather than parallel) to other nowadays raw black metal.

Bašmu is Xülthysy’s muse alone, and we can only guess at what haunts his soul. Lunar Apparitions is honored to resurrect VVitchblood from those dungeonic depths and ruin your day with its long-overdue CD release.

In the meantime, hear the track “The Crooked Wand of the Ophidian Craft” here:

CAEDES CRUENTA to reissue second album thru HELTER SKELTER on vinyl and tape, preparing third album

Today, Helter Skelter Productions (distributed & marketed by Regain Records) sets July 16th as the international release date for Caedes Cruenta’s classic second album, Ερείπια Ψυχών, on vinyl LP and cassette tape formats.

Formed in 2003, Caedes Cruenta are the foremost torchbearers for the classic Greek black metal sound. For them, the early Hellenic flame of the “Big Three” – Rotting Christ, Varathron, and Necromantia – never died, nor did the contemporaneous flames of Septic Flesh, Thou Art Lord, Kawir, Zemial, and Nightfall among others. “Greek black metal” may have changed shapes and styles over the past 30 years, but for the members of Caedes Cruenta, the ancient days of the early ‘90s burns stronger than ever.

Caedes Cruenta indeed made it their mission to uphold this noble sound, and it arguably reached its perfect on their second album, Ερείπια Ψυχών, originally released at the end of 2014. Whereas their Σκιές δαιμόνων debut album from four years previous took an altogether more atmospheric route, here Caedes Cruenta expanded from a duo to a quartet, and immediately is that classic Greek physicality felt: pulsing and patient but portending ominousness and metallic might, Ερείπια Ψυχών is the surging, Alpha sound of ancient brimstone made forever vital and virile. Bass-heavy in its infinitely potent throb and tastefully embellished with subtle layers of mystical synth, one could be forgiven for thinking Caedes Cruenta transported the listener back in time, so authentic and invigorating is its Hellenic classicism.

Thus, Helter Skelter is proud to make Ερείπια Ψυχών available again on vinyl and cassette. This reissue comes in lieu of Caedes Cruenta‘s forthcoming third album, Of Ritual Necrophagia and Mysterious Ghoul Cults, which is currently being recorded and will be released by Helter Skelter in late 2020 / early 2021.

In the meantime, stream Ερείπια Ψυχών in its entirety here:

Russia’s DUNWICH set release date for CALIGARI debut, reveal first video

Today, Caligari Records sets August 21st as the international release date for the striking debut album of Russia’s DunwichTail-Tied Hearts, on CD format.

Dunwich are a power-trio hailing from Russia, and are one of the most unique and exciting bands Caligari has come across in recent years. The label is absolutely thrilled to be unveiling the band’s very first recording, a fully realized full-length bearing the enigmatic title Tail-Tied Hearts.

As a trio, Dunwich are undoubtedly a sum of their three parts. To understand the background of each member, given the circumstances for so many calling Russia home, is to more fully understand Dunwich the band.

Frontwoman Margarita Dunwich is not only the band’s voice and style; her life consists of heavy music and dark aesthetics. She often advocates style, particularly the influence of her father, who grew up behind the Iron Curtain and picked up new hard rock releases when it was extremely difficult to do so.

Guitarist/organist Anton Bronikov was born into a musical family and, since childhood, attended music school. As an informal teenager in a quiet southern Russian town, he began to appreciate music not only for rebellion but also for drive.

Drummer Mikhail Markelov connected himself rather late with the world of music: he sat down on drums for the first time after leaving school. Self-taught, he learned to play diverse styles by accepting the fact that good music is not always associated with genre.
Together, Dunwich is an attempt to dive into the bottomless ocean of your emotions. This is an unexpected call in the desert of your consciousness. This is a walk through the dark forest of your mind. Dunwich‘s goal is to make you look into the abyss of your thoughts. They want to remind you of what you diligently avoid every day; your emotions will say everything for them.

To pinpoint the peculiar magick of Tail-Tied Hearts is to undermine Dunwich‘s boundary-free artistry. Surely, there exist frayed threads of doom, prog, darkwave, black metal, post-punk, and plenty of other orbiting points across and around. But more accurately, each of the eight component songs comprising Tail-Tied Hearts exists as its own world, its own experience, yet all worlds/experiences tied into a greater whole – a much, much greater WHOLE, and one that’s as devouring as it is liberating. And therein lies the paradoxical beauty of Dunwich

Words fail to do this justice. Hearing is believing, and believing is immersing. Dunwich dare you to enter their Tail-Tied Hearts.

Begin entering their mesmerizing, magickal world with the haunting new video for “Through the Dense Woods” here:

cover and tracklisting follows:

2. Through the Dense Woods
3. Solitude

Canada’s PANZERFAUST set release date for new EISENWALD album, reveal first track

Today, Eisenwald sets August 28th as the North American release date for Panzerfaust‘s The Suns of Perdition II: Render Unto Eden – the highly anticipated second installment of a four-part album series – on digipack CD and vinyl LP formats.

For the better part of 15 years, Canada’s Panzerfaust have been steadily crafting some of the finest, most thought-provoking black metal. With their The Winds Will Lead Us… debut album in 2006 onward, their obsidian flower forever kept blossoming, culminating in 2013’s pivotal Jevohah-Jireh: The Divine Anti-logos, which signaled a significant (and fortuitous) shift in the band’s aesthetic. In 2016, Panzerfaust released The Lucifer Principle EP, pushing their adventurous spirit yet further, perhaps most forecasted by the closing Johnny Cash cover.

However, it was 2019’s The Suns of Perdition – Chapter I: War, Horrid War where Panzerfaust truly had their watershed moment. Released to widespread acclaim by Eisenwald, this staggering work brimmed with daring and dynamics – a kaleidoscopic fury, if you will – that vivaciously and viciously displayed a band hitting their creative peak. The album was the first chapter of the band’s tetralogy examining the malign episodes of this past century, shining a light on difficult subject matter using a begrimed philosophical lens. The resulting synthesis is what George Orwell once described as [a vision of the future] “a boot stamping on a human face forever.”

Alas, Panzerfaust waste no time in delivering the next chapter of that tetralogy – and equally keep a fever pitch to that creative peak – with the much-anticipated The Suns of Perdition II: Render Unto Eden. Recorded at BWC Studios with Greg Dawson and with mastering by Sergei Lazar at CDM Records, Render Unto Eden is an altogether more somber record: here do Panzerfaust more fully work with light and shade, their darkness displaying far more hues than previously deemed imaginable. Whereas the five-song first chapter was taut ‘n’ terrorizing, The Suns of Perdition II likewise features five songs but in a more expansive 44-minute runtime. As such, massive vistas of molten melancholy unfold, the inexorable push-and-pull patient but persistent; layers upon layers of understanding are packed into each of these scintillating minutes. The violence is more carefully doled out, in kind, and the sum effect is nothing short of hypnotic, particularly the track “Promethean Fire,” which features guest vocals from Maria Arkhipova of Russia’s Arkona. The Suns of Perdition II: Render Unto Eden echoes within the mind and spirit long after the record’s over…

A new dawn looms, retaining the brilliance of yesteryear’s horizon. Ominous and omnipotent, here rises Panzerfaust‘s The Suns of Perdition II: Render Unto Eden.

In the meantime, hear the aforementioned brand-new track “The Faustian Pact” here:
