LUNAR APPARITIONS to release BAŠMU’s second album on CD – features members of FLEŠŠ+++

Today, Lunar Apparitions, a division of Nebular Carcoma, announces August 6th as the international release date for Bašmu‘s haunting second album, VVitchblood, on CD format.

Bašmu is the sole domain of the mysterious Xülthysy, who’s also insanely prolific across other such projects as Flešš – with whom LUNAR APPARITIONS reissued their debut album and demo on separate A5 digipack editions last year – Chaoist, Drenglyndr, and Girtablullû. Although all but Chaoist are some iteration of black metal, with Bašmu does Xülthysy explore the shimmering shadowself of the most rotten, mildewed depths of the ancient ’90s black metal underground – back when traditional witchcraft, vampirism, blood rites, self-hatred, and generally antisocial behavior were all mandatory. Taken another way, if Flešš is comparable to Belkètre, then Bašmu most definitely would be comparable to Moëvöt.

Indeed, it’s not uncharitable to liken Xülthysy to the works of Vordb Dréagvor Uèzréèvb, the insanely prolific deviant of France’s infamous Black Legions. As such, Bašmu mines equally chilling – and equally stratifying – territory, travelling from dungeonic violence up above to lost-in-the-forest ambience. Originally released in 2017 but only on cassette tape, VVitchblood arguably plunged deepest into this treacherous terrain and most definitely with the most unorthodoxy. Undeniably raw, there exists a concertedly detailed soundfield utilizing, paradoxically, the sparsest palette. Each note is where it needs to be, hovering and anguished and unearthly, and others comes in when ready and melt into further reverberations. Xülthysy spares no weapon in his quest for medieval ruination and rancor; FX pedals are applied liberally to guitars and vocals, malforming both into new (and more horrifying) manifestations, while the synth/organ work here will unnerve even the steeliest of constitutions. VVitchblood undoubtedly bears strong resemblance to black metal “back in the day,” but its atonal ‘n’ atagonistic aspect puts it into a realm all its own…and one perpendicular (rather than parallel) to other nowadays raw black metal.

Bašmu is Xülthysy’s muse alone, and we can only guess at what haunts his soul. Lunar Apparitions is honored to resurrect VVitchblood from those dungeonic depths and ruin your day with its long-overdue CD release.

CAEDES CRUENTA to reissue second album thru HELTER SKELTER on vinyl and tape, preparing third album

Today, Helter Skelter Productions (distributed & marketed by Regain Records) sets July 16th as the international release date for Caedes Cruenta’s classic second album, Ερείπια Ψυχών, on vinyl LP and cassette tape formats.

Formed in 2003, Caedes Cruenta are the foremost torchbearers for the classic Greek black metal sound. For them, the early Hellenic flame of the “Big Three” – Rotting Christ, Varathron, and Necromantia – never died, nor did the contemporaneous flames of Septic Flesh, Thou Art Lord, Kawir, Zemial, and Nightfall among others. “Greek black metal” may have changed shapes and styles over the past 30 years, but for the members of Caedes Cruenta, the ancient days of the early ‘90s burns stronger than ever.

Caedes Cruenta indeed made it their mission to uphold this noble sound, and it arguably reached its perfect on their second album, Ερείπια Ψυχών, originally released at the end of 2014. Whereas their Σκιές δαιμόνων debut album from four years previous took an altogether more atmospheric route, here Caedes Cruenta expanded from a duo to a quartet, and immediately is that classic Greek physicality felt: pulsing and patient but portending ominousness and metallic might, Ερείπια Ψυχών is the surging, Alpha sound of ancient brimstone made forever vital and virile. Bass-heavy in its infinitely potent throb and tastefully embellished with subtle layers of mystical synth, one could be forgiven for thinking Caedes Cruenta transported the listener back in time, so authentic and invigorating is its Hellenic classicism.

Thus, Helter Skelter is proud to make Ερείπια Ψυχών available again on vinyl and cassette. This reissue comes in lieu of Caedes Cruenta‘s forthcoming third album, Of Ritual Necrophagia and Mysterious Ghoul Cults, which is currently being recorded and will be released by Helter Skelter in late 2020 / early 2021.

ÚLFARR set release date for new PURITY THROUGH FIRE album, reveal first track

Today, Purity Through Fire sets October 31st as the international release date for Úlfarr‘s highly anticipated debut album, Hate & Terror – The Rise Of Pure Evil, on regular jewelcase CD and A5 digipack limited to 100 copies.

Since 2011, Úlfarr have stood for uncompromising, antisocial UK black metal – or, under their own banner of Cumbrian Black Metal. Helmed by Dominus, AKA Hrafn, who counts the equally prolific Thy Dying Light amongst his activities, Úlfarr released a couple demos its first few years and then a split album with comrades Hrafnblóð. Another demo followed in 2014, followed by, uniquely, two live albums.

Time has festered for five years as well as Hrafn’s hate, and at last comes Hate & Terror – The Rise Of Pure Evil, Úlfarr‘s debut album. Although released earlier by the cult Worship Tapes in an extremely limited edition, the fire burning through Úlfarr‘s first full-length statement has lost none of its potency. In fact, those flames are even more devouring: unapologetically traditional black metal in the vein of classic Craft, Darkthrone, Mayhem, One Head One Tail, and Death Cult. As ever, Úlfarr are inspired by the desolate landscapes of their homeland, the unrelenting dismal climate, and a shared disdain towards humanity in the overpopulated wastelands of modern Britain. You don’t so much as listen to this album as FEEL it – and it hates you, too.

DIY as always, Hate & Terror – The Rise Of Pure Evil was recorded entirely by Dominus, with drums programmed by Skoth and mixing & mastering by Azrael. No hope, and NO CONTACT! Úlfarr plays CUMBRIAN BLACK METAL exclusively!

Begin feeling that hate & terror with the new track “Hate & Terror – The Rise of Pure Evil – Part I” here:

Since rising to prominence with his first band Trelldom, legendary singer, front man, artist and composer, Gaahl, has been one of Norway’s most talked about and respected extreme metal musicians. His work with Trelldom, Gorgoroth and God Seed has been widely regarded as some of the best the black metal scene has had to offer.

Gaahls passion and dedication to his art has earned him followers far and beyond the realms of the metal community, becoming a household name in the art scene and a he has become a well-respected alternative thinker.

In 2015 the charismatic singer assembled some of Norway’s finest metal musicians under the new moniker Gaahls WYRD. The band consisted of Ole Walaunet (The Batallion, God Seed, Grimfist), Frode Kilvik (Krakow, Aeternus), Sir (Trelldom, Djerv, God Seed) and Bård Kolstad (Leprous, Borknagar).

The band’s first show was an appearance at the one-off festival BlekkMetal, held in Bergen, Norway the same year. The show was recorded for the live EP “Nov. 15”, released by the band in 2017. The EP was celebrated during the bands two European runs “Vardøger 2017” and “Vardøger” 2018. Bård Kolstad was replaced by Kevin Kvåle (Horizon Ablaze) in the 2nd half of 2017 and Kårstad stepped out of the band after the first leg of the “Vardøger” tour.

In mid 2018 the band teamed up with producer Iver Sandøy (Enslaved, Emmerhoff & the Melancholy Babies) to record their first full-length album “GastiR – Ghosts Invited”, set to be released by Season of Mist (World) and Indie Recordings (Norway) on May 31st.

The highly anticipated debut album from Gaahls WYRD will see the band chart territories within the extreme metal genre no one has ever walked before.

Drudkh release first track and details of new album

Ukrainian black metal icons, DRUDKH are releasing the first stunning track of their forthcoming new album, ‘Їм часто сниться капіж’ (They Often See Dreams About The Spring), which will hit the stores on March 9th 2018.

The opening song, “Nakryta Neba Burym Dakhom…”, which is based on a poem by Ukrainian author Bohdan Ihor Antonych (1909–1937)

Artwork and album details of ‘Їм часто сниться капіж’ (They Often See Dreams About The Spring) can be viewed above and album details below.

Track-list
1. Nakryta Neba Burym Dakhom… (9:53)
2. U Dakhiv Irzhavim Kolossyu… (8:43)
3. Vechirniy Smerk Okutuye Kimnaty… (9:29)
4. Za Zoreyu Scho Striloyu Syaye… (6:45)
5. Bilyavyi Den’ Vtomyvsya I prytykh… (8:40)
Total: 43:30

DRUDKH are a black metal legend. True to the values of this extreme genre, the enigmatic Ukrainians refuse to follow the rock ‘n’ roll rulebook and provide no answers, no statements, no shows – all that matters to them is their music.

The sound of DRUDKH is equally based on a solid foundation consisting of the by now traditional Nordic variant of this style as on the band’s highly distinct individual “Slavonic” interpretation of it.

Yet at the same time, DRUDKH have constantly evolved, shifted, and morphed their musical approach while holding true to the original course. It is therefore no surprise that their forthcoming eleventh full-length, ‘They Often See Dreams About the Spring’ (which is a translation of the original Ukrainian title) brings another slight correction to the general direction. Where previous album ‘A Furrow Cut Short’ (2015) basically followed on the harsh and old school lead of its predecessor ‘Eternal Turn of the Wheel’ (2012), DRUDKH’s new masterpiece offers a more atmospheric and melodic feel that rather points towards the cinematic soundscapes of ‘Autumn Aurora’ (2004).

In their ongoing metamorphosis, DRUDKH seem to have abandoned the slightly progressive and lighter tone of ‘Handful of Stars’ (2010) for the time being. This does not mean it can never return… The Ukrainians have for example revisited their early legacy from the Nordic black metal inspired debut ‘Forgotten Legends’ (2003) several times, but also occasionally brought back the folklore influences that had characterised ‘The Swan Road’ (2005). On ‘Blood in Our Wells’ (2006) some progressive elements surfaced clearly for the first time, while the instrumental and partly acoustic ‘Songs of Grief and Solitude’ (2006) was followed by a sharp turn on the bleak and brutal album, ‘Estrangement’ (2007). DRUDKH’s celebrated highlight, ‘Microcosmos’ (2009) finally appeared to tie up the different strands of their previous works, before a new cycle started with the next albums.

DRUDKH’s latest albums and split-singles have drawn heavily from 20th century Ukrainian poetry for lyrical inspiration and ‘They Often See Dreams About the Spring’ continues this trend. Poetic gems from Bohdan Ihor Antonych, Maik Yohansen, Vasyl’ Bobyns’kyi and Pavlo Fylypovych have been unearthed by the band and brought back to life on this album. ‘They Often See Dreams About the Spring’ delivers black metal poetry at its best. Let your ears hear and your mind wander…
