NATTFOG to release special new PURITY THROUGH FIRE recording

Today, Purity Through Fire sets May 31st as the international release date for a special new recording from NattfogPohjan Porteilta, on CD and vinyl LP formats.

A lurking-yet-potent essence in the ever-fertile Finnish black metal underground, Nattfog have been a study in “quality over quantity” since their formation in the dark days of 2007. After a demo and a split LP Nattfog boldly proclaimed their arrival with the debut album Mustan auringon riitti. Righteously raw yet majestically melodic, Mustan auringon riitti was quintessential Finnish black metal to the letter, but uniquely maintained a rowdy ‘n’ rousing folkloric element which suggested further mastery to come.

After the all-too-short Yön varjoista… EP in 2018 through Purity Through Fire, that “further mastery” has finally come to fruition with a special new recording from NattfogPohjan Porteilta. Featuring three brand-new songs and two rerecorded songs from the prior split LP (the CD version will include the two songs from the Yön varjoista… vinyl), as expected, the band elaborate upon that folk element which so earmarked their debut album; however, hanging upon stout and ancient melodies, be assured that that folkishness is never mawkish and nothing but manly, poignantly (and proudly) conveying the austerity and traditionalism of old Finnish life. Likewise, the fire so stoked Mustan auringon riitti here burns with more clarity, not losing any of Nattfog‘s original grit and, if anything, adding a certain muscularity to their solemn (and sometimes stomping) surge. It all comes together to create an endlessly satisfying and fully focused collection which ably balances past, present, and future.

The breath of night fills the lungs of Nattfog, and hereby do they hunt with Pohjan Porteilta!

Since rising to prominence with his first band Trelldom, legendary singer, front man, artist and composer, Gaahl, has been one of Norway’s most talked about and respected extreme metal musicians. His work with Trelldom, Gorgoroth and God Seed has been widely regarded as some of the best the black metal scene has had to offer.

Gaahls passion and dedication to his art has earned him followers far and beyond the realms of the metal community, becoming a household name in the art scene and a he has become a well-respected alternative thinker.

In 2015 the charismatic singer assembled some of Norway’s finest metal musicians under the new moniker Gaahls WYRD. The band consisted of Ole Walaunet (The Batallion, God Seed, Grimfist), Frode Kilvik (Krakow, Aeternus), Sir (Trelldom, Djerv, God Seed) and Bård Kolstad (Leprous, Borknagar).

The band’s first show was an appearance at the one-off festival BlekkMetal, held in Bergen, Norway the same year. The show was recorded for the live EP “Nov. 15”, released by the band in 2017. The EP was celebrated during the bands two European runs “Vardøger 2017” and “Vardøger” 2018. Bård Kolstad was replaced by Kevin Kvåle (Horizon Ablaze) in the 2nd half of 2017 and Kårstad stepped out of the band after the first leg of the “Vardøger” tour.

In mid 2018 the band teamed up with producer Iver Sandøy (Enslaved, Emmerhoff & the Melancholy Babies) to record their first full-length album “GastiR – Ghosts Invited”, set to be released by Season of Mist (World) and Indie Recordings (Norway) on May 31st.

The highly anticipated debut album from Gaahls WYRD will see the band chart territories within the extreme metal genre no one has ever walked before.

ENTHRONED is surely a name black metal fans are no strangers to. Over the course of the last 25 years, they have pushed the boundaries of black metal and the deepness of the Left Hand Path philosophy further within. The quintet has channelled that dedication into their newest record. ‘Cold Black Suns’ is a dark and crushing black metal album where cold riffing, blood chilling atmospheres, and ritualistic drumming are keys to forging their most mature and accomplished opus to date.

The band, who crawled out of the black lands of Belgium in 1993, inked their first contract less than a year after its formation, and recorded debut album ‘Prophecies of Pagan Fire,’ which is now considered an all-time classic in the genre.

By then known as The Blackened Horde to fans and the scene at large, ENTHRONED recruited guitarist Nornagest and within 2 years entered Hautregard Studios to give birth to their second album. After the recording, tragedy struck and founding member and drummer Cernunnos (1997) took his own life.

The band went on to record the album using Cernunnos’s drum tracks from rehearsal recordings which were recorded by long time friend Da Cardoen, from the Belgian band ASPHYXIA. ‘Towards the Skullthrone of Satan’ was thus born. Since then, ENTHRONED went on to tour the world and have released a total of 10 full-lengths, one live album, and a hearty handful of splits and EPs.

Now, as the band celebrates 26 years as one of black metal’s premier outfits, they are ready to unleash number 11 onto the masses. ‘Cold Black Suns’ is an icy, brutal offering from the band that will see a worldwide release on June 7, 2019 via Season of Mist, making it their debut to the label. This is the band’s first album in five years, following up 2014’s critically acclaimed ‘Sovereigns.’

‘Cold Black Suns’ is one of 2019’s most anticipated releases and is certain to hold up to the hype that surrounds it, delivering an evolved and crushing offering from Belgium’s own black metal legends.

Towards Obscurities Beyond will offer eight songs in similar writing style as the band’s 2017 EP Hour Of The Summoning with a slightly more melodic touch to it: take the band’s death metal sound and add some melodic components of Dissection or early Necrophobic.

Some song titles so far are “Infernal Resurrection,” “Majesty of Chaos,” “As The Maggots Feast,” and the title track, “Towards Obscurities Beyond.” Artwork is being handled by Adam Burke (Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats, Vektor et. al.).

SHADES OF DEEP WATER set release date for new DUNKELHEIT album, reveal first tracks

Today, Dunkelheit Produktionen sets July 25th as the international release date for Shades of Deep Water‘s highly anticipated second album, Death’s Threshold, on CD and vinyl LP format.

A cult fixture in the funeral doom scene, Shades of Deep Water began its exploration of the abyss in 2006. The sole creation of one J.H., the band’s ascent/descent has been as steady as his music is slow. From 2007 to 2009, three demos were released in succession and then the Constant Pressure EP in 2012, all before the debut album, Waterways, in 2013. Aptly titled, Waterways suggested the aquatic, abyssal themes Shades of Deep Water would henceforth explore. From there, J.H. hit a creative streak, with two more EPs following as well as two compilations, such was the demand for his music among ultra-doom aficionados.

Now, at long last, arrives Shades of Deep Water‘s magnum opus, Death’s Threshold. Likewise aptly titled, Death’s Threshold is a veritable exploration (and celebration) of his native Finland’s rich history in funeral doom and doom-death. Comprising four utterly epic, stretched-across-the-abyss tracks in a vast-yet-focused 41 minutes, here do Shades of Deep Water drown the listener in physically/spiritually crushing atmosphere, dragging that listener down/down/DOWN under, far below the depths and never to return; the effect is hauntingly hypnotic, and almost comfortingly so. But, as this is strictly (and unapologetically) within the funeral doom pantheon, rest assured that there is no light, no hope, wherever the album roams.

Where will you chose to roam? Allow Shades of Deep Water to take you to Death’s Threshold. Take the first step there with the new track “Death’s Threshold – Part 1” here:
Cover art, by Sv Bell, and tracklisting are as follows:

Vreid release lyric video for “One Hundred Years”

Norwegian Black & Roll veterans VREID have premiered the official lyric video for the song, “One Hundred Years,” which is taken from the band’s latest release, ‘Lifehunger.’
VREID songwriter/ bass guiratist Jarle Hváll Kvåle states: “To me, ‘One Hundred Years’ is the strongest song in our band’s history. It’s a song that captures the essence and multitude of Vreid. It’s a song that we will guaranteed play in all our concerts. ‘One Hundred Years’ was inspired by a poem by the great Norwegian author Knut Hamsun. This lit a torch that resulted in this song about the everlasting duality of nature and human nature. The video is done by Håvard Nesbø, with spectacular filming of the dramatic and inspiring scenery and history of my beloved Vestlandet (western Norway). An eternal source to inspiration. He visualized the song beyond what I could have imagined.”
The artwork for ‘Lifehunger’ can be viewed below, together with the album details.

Track-list
1. Flowers & Blood (1:50)
2. One Hundred Years (5:39)
3. Lifehunger (5:36)

VREID were formed in 2004. The Norwegian metal brigade rose from the ashes of WINDIR after the tragic perishing of the “Sognametal” legends with the declared mission of exploring new musical paths.

The Norsemen proved true to their words and have so far delivered 7 albums and one DVD, which each received high praise from critics and fans alike. VREID chose a course of constant evolution that is marked by thematically denoted phases regarding their often historically inspired lyrics.

This became particularly clear with albums ‘I Krig’ (2007) and ‘Milorg’ (2009), which both revolved around concepts dealing with resistance and liberation of Norway during World War II. With their following three records, VREID returned to their Norse roots, especially on latest full-length, ‘Sólverv’ which received high critical acclaim in 2015.

VREID have hammered out their success partly by being a heavily touring band. The four-piece performed more than 500 shows in 25 countries so far. Their everlasting march to conquer new territories has led the Norwegians to headline tours in Europe, North America, Japan, and India.

VREID‘s style is often referred to as black ‘n roll and Metal Hammer UK described their music as “a unique time travel in metal” as elements of 70’s rock, 80’s classic metal, and Norwegian black metal are all clearly audible.

Now with eighth album ‘Lifehunger’, black ‘n roll is back! With eight brand new tracks, VREID are ready for the next chapter.

Tracklist:
1. Nocebo (02:31)

5. Regret (06:56)
6. Stay (02:22)
7. Coma (05:10)
8. Alone (02:01)
9. Adore (08:42)
10. DDHS (01:23)
Total playing time: 0:43:28
Contrasting the bleakness of their debut record ‘Home’, Canadian post-black metal act NUMENOREAN have painted their sophomore effort ‘Adore’ in an array of brighter shades, while never loosing intensity. The new record will be released on Season of Mist on April 12.

Having only released a 2-song demo in 2014, the band got offered a lengthy recording deal by Season of Mist. Soon after, debut record ‘Home’ followed and the underground met NUMENOREAN’s take on post black metal with some critical acclaim, yet also polarizing views, due to the graphic nature of the cover.

With ‘Home’, NUMENOREAN achieved far more than just following a musical path pioneered by DEAFHEAVEN, ALCEST, WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM, and DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT. The Canadians crafted a musical masterpiece that embraced beauty, harshness and melancholy in equal measure and transformed those into fragile, nihilistic and hauntingly beautiful songs.

After playing shows with DEAFHEAVEN, GHOST BATH and BATUSKHA in Canada, the United States and Australia, NUMENOREAN set up a crowdfunding campaign to fund the recording of the sophomore album with Josh Schroeder (GHOST BATH).

Forming the antithesis of the previous album, ‘Adore’ adopts a more vibrant approach, both musically and thematically. Rather than seeing life from a nihilistic view, the songs convey a loose message of hope. The lyrics and the theme of the music explore being beat, down and broken, but still finding a way to preserve by finding reasons to appreciate life for what it can be.

NUMENOREAN skilfully employ the feeling of melancholy, an intricate song writing and the black metal roots that marked their debut. Yet the newfound hooks and facets of ‘Adore’, represent a band that has established and evolved sound. ‘Adore’, will be one for the year lists.

When Abbath announced that he had left IMMORTAL, it sent massive shockwaves through the metal scene. The iconic frontman had long become the “face” of the Norwegian black scene, his image synonymous with the genre. Upon releasing his debut album with his eponymous new band, ABBATH, in 2016, trve fans were satiated with a dose of icy, blackened fury.

Now, the Norwegian giant returns for round two, armed with a refined lineup and ready to strike with a sophomore effort that is sure to once again exceed the expectations of Abbath’s loyal fanbase. ‘Outstrider’ sees a maturation in sound, delivering a tighter, well-rounded offering from the band as they come into their own identity.

While there are moments that certainly channel the frosty hallmarks of IMMORTAL, there is no danger of ABBATH repeating that formula. ABBATH draws from NWOBM and melodic influences, adding a fresh new flavor to the sound that the band’s founder came to define.

‘Oustrider’ consists of eight, crushing original songs and concludes with a fiery BATHORY cover. The album promises a full-on aural assault from start to finish with frigid riffage and a robust pocket that are layered with vocals from one of the most identifiable voices in black metal. If you thought ABBATH came in hot with their last record, just wait until you hear this!

Italian black metallers Totalitarian stream new BARREN VOID EP

Today, history-driven Italian black metallers Totalitarian stream the entirety of their highly anticipated new EP, Bloodlands, here:
Set for international release on April 12th via Barren Void Records, with official distribution by Lavadome Productions, hear Totalitarian‘s Bloodlands in its entirety here:
Following their 2017 debut De Arte Tragoediae Divinae, Totalitarian return with a malicious new record titled Bloodlands, which embarks on a soul-corrupting journey through unprecedented violence and the most hideous deeds the so-called humankind has ever been able to commit itself to.

Overall, Bloodlands represents a relentless black metal tour de force, especially when compared to the debut album. As cliché as it may sound, the evil is one, but its faces are many – that’s the truth. Bear in mind: the bleakness and the ever-present nihilism will always be maintained in anything Totalitarian will ever create.

Valkyrja was founded in 2004 with the earnest intention of channeling violence, deprivation, and loathing through means of extraordinarily potent audio emissions. Their ideals were permeated by passionate and boundless perversion – a sickly urge festering ever so vibrantly in the essence of its members, a will to cast off the manacles of societal enslavement and leave a dying world behind. While the brotherhood took shape, opposition and defiance surfaced from the deepest recesses of the mind: a fierce hostility towards the laws and morals of their surroundings, notions which felt entirely alien to the band’s core.

As part of Valkyrja‘s philosophy of ridding themselves from limitations, no specific genre was ever chosen since it would only serve to establish a framework of useless expectation. The artistic output created under the flag of Valkyrja defies all earthly shackles, including those of commercial categorization. With ideology as lodestar, venturing into darkness without a backwards glance, they took their first fledgling steps on a road staked out by the night itself.

Valkyrja‘s debut album, The Invocation of Demise, was recorded in Necromorbus Studio during March 2007 and then released in physical form by Northern Silence Productions six months later. Valkyrja quickly gained their reputation as a ferocious live act: a display of carnal lust leaving each stage with the foul scent of death. Drawn to the stench of putrid bereavement, Metal Blade Records contracted the band in 2009. The Invocation of Demise was treated to a re-release by their new ally, thus spreading the curse even further. The same year also saw a return to Necromorbus Studio for the recording of their second album, the most aptly named Contamination. The new tracks would prove to be a crucial part of the band’s live setlist as they, the following autumn, embarked on their first European campaign.

Forged and conceived to reflect blood and fire,  the third Valkyrja album, The Antagonist’s Fire, set the world aflame on the eleventh day of the eleventh month in the year 2013. The opus also marked the beginning of Valkyrja‘s long-running collaboration with elite underground label World Terror Committee. During the past decade, facilitated by Massive Music and accompanied by titans of extreme metal, over 100 different European cities has been forced to swallow the bitter wine of sonic violence. Furthermore, 2016 and 2017 saw two extensive North American tours with Valkyrja as co-headliner, during which 22 different states were soaked in rotten blood.

Five years removed from the third opus, Valkyrja return under a new guise. The past few years have seen the band subjected to several crucial lineup changes, igniting a period of utter despair that would sow the seeds for what has now come to pass: Throne Ablaze was unleashed upon the world on November 26th, 2018. The album reflects the passion and dedication of everyone involved, those who face every storm – past and future – with weapon in hand. It will forever stand as a monument of continuous struggles – so right there, in the core of this strife to conquer every obstacle, kneel and obey the fires of the blazing throne! Cover art, courtesy of Nestor Avalos, and tracklisting are as follows:
