CANNABIS CORPSE premiere first track of new album ‘Nug So Vile’

Stoner death metal icons CANNABIS CORPSE will release their brand new album ‘Nug So Vile’ on November 1, 2019 via Season of Mist! In conjunction with this announcement, CANNABIS CORPSE have partnered with Dread Central to premiere the gory, animated music video for the first single “Cylinders of Madness”.

The video, which was created entirely by CANNABIS CORPSE drummer Josh “Hallhammer” Hall, can be seen and heard here:
Phil Hall comments on the track: “My brother Hallhammer and I are excited to premiere the animated video for ‘Cylinders of Madness!’ This video is Hallhammer’s very first foray into animation and marks the starting point for a lot of amazing content in the future. This medium opens up a whole new world of possibilities for insane content for Cannabis Corpse! Stay tuned!”
CANNABIS CORPSE have furthermore revealed the artwork and track-list of ‘Nug So Vile’, which can be viewed below.
Tracklist:
1. Conquerors of Chronageddon (03:15)
2. Nug So Vile (03:08)

Bonus track:

CANNABIS CORPSE’s latest strain of weed-metal is another potent dose of bong ripping brutality laced with tasty riffs, vicious drumming, and powerful THC. With a title inspired by CRYPTOPSY’s seminal album, ‘Nug So Vile’ is a horrifying look into the mind of a hardcore marijuana abuser with the demented fantasies of a reefer addict fully on display. The record is more than just a mere follow up to 2017’s ‘Left Hand Pass’, but rather serves as a solid companion piece, seamlessly picking up right where the band left off.

Sharing a passion for marijuana and death metal, brothers Phil ‘Landphil’ Hall (MUNICIPAL WASTE, IRON REAGAN) and Josh ‘Hallhammer’ Hall formed CANNABIS CORPSE in 2006 in Richmond, VA as a loving homage to the genre’s forefathers. The brothers decided from the start to separate themselves from the pack by infusing a green sense of humour into their horror-inspired lyrics. Meanwhile, it has become a badge of honour for many of the Halls’ idols to have one of their titles parodied by the Richmond outfit.

Now, CANNABIS CORPSE has returned as a three-piece and despite slimming the line-up down since ‘Left Hand Pass’, ‘Nug So Vile’ still sounds as full and thick as ever, solidifying their place among death metal’s elite. So, roll a blunt, grab a neckbrace, and prepare yourself for another nasty assault from the kings of weed metal.

TEMPLE OV PERVERSION set release date for CLAVIS SECRETORVM debut EP, reveal first track

Today, Clavis Secretorvm sets October 18th as the international release date for Temple ov Perversion‘s  striking self-titled debut EP on 12″ vinyl format.

Hailing from Switzerland, Temple ov Perversion are a young band with old souls. The band’s first demo, Rehearsal MMXVII, was a rough ‘n’ ready display of their ancient, witching metal, suggesting salacious glories to come. Alas, they have arrived with Temple Ov Perversion, a veritable bounty of black filth, lust, and sleaze. Despite its release in the year 2019, one could mistake Temple ov Perversion‘s true opening salvo as some long-lost relic of the early ’90s, announced on fliers that a release was forthcoming on Deathlike Silence Productions; cult names invoked include Hadez, Imperator, Mortem, and Hungary’s Tormentor. Four songs in 20 minutes, each as stout and swaggering as the next, and what you altogether get is a loose ‘n’ lawless expurse of sonic sodomy that’s immediately headbanging and evil as fuck: no scenes, no rules, NO LIGHT! Temple ov Perversion play black metal in the old vein exclusively!

In the meantime, hear the new track “Arrival ov the Horns” here:

REIGN IN BLOOD stream IRON BONEHEAD comeback album

Today, German black metal sorcerors Reign in Blood stream their long-awaited comeback album, Missa Pro Defunctis, . Set for international release on August 16th via Iron Bonehead Productions, hear Reign in Blood‘s Missa Pro Defunctis in its entirety here.
Staunchly German, Reign in Blood formed in Saxony in the dark days of 2004. Largely steered by founding vocalist/guitarist Demon Raise and drummer Athanasius, the band soon assaulted the black metal underground with a demo, a split, and an EP, all between 2006-2007. Then, in 2009, came Reign in Blood‘s cult debut album, Diabolical Katharsis, and they then seemingly receded into the shadows, as violently as they originally burst forth from them.

Athanassius and bassist Asuras left Reign in Blood to focus on their own projects, and Demon Raise was unable to celebrate the band like in the early days because of personality reasons. Demon Raise and fellow guitarist Deus made a decision to put the band on ice for an indefinite time – but the impulse to create music again never died. And so, at the end of 2016, Reign in Blood began rehearsing again. In short time, it was clear that a new album must be made.

Alas, longtime fans Iron Bonehead are honored to hoist the banners of Reign in Blood‘s surprise comeback with the LONG-awaited second album, Missa Pro Defunctis. Truly “old-soul black metal,” there is nothing trendy nor nice about Reign in Blood‘s attack here: featuring both ultraviolence and melody, hammering primitivism and fleet-footed complexity, haunting atmospheres and dizzying delirium, Missa Pro Defunctis is an album of stark contrasts that somehow is threaded together with the most elusive ‘n’ sulfurous magick.

Fittingly recorded at Old Spirit Studio with mixing & mastering courtesy of the esteemed Patrick Engel at Temple of Disharmony, Reign in Blood‘s return also elusively locates a soundfield that’s both rudely raw and clear, cutting, and nuanced in a disarmingly professional manner – again, further underlining how elusive and sulfurous these Germans’ magick is. Indeed, this is defiant German black metal that could’ve been released at the dawn of the new millennium, when the BM underground was still a dangerous entity, and here are Reign in Blood to regain their rightful throne. All hail!

Bestial metal vanguard Abysmal Lord premiere new track

Today, bestial metal vanguard Abysmal Lord premiere the new track “Nuclear Absolution” . The track hails from the band’s highly anticipated second album, Exaltation of the Infernal Cabal, set for international release on August 16th via Hells Headbangers.

In lieu of a full North American tour starting today (dates further below), hear Abysmal Lord‘s “Nuclear Absolution” in its entirety here:
It’s been four long years since Abysmal Lord‘s cult debut album for Hells HeadbangersDisciples of the Inferno. In that time, the bestial metal resurgence has hit maximum occupancy, and each new pretender to the throne sadly waters down the atavistic power the subgenre once held, neutering the cruel ‘n’ caustic counterpoint bestial metal offers to the increasingly safe “black metal” scene. Also during that time, while Abysmal Lord have only delivered one scant recording – a split 7″ with equally stout bestial comrades Crurifragium, released last year via Hells Headbangers – the Louisiana natives haven’t sat idly by, taking to many a stage across the United States and unleashing their war command upon more and newer audiences.

Now, when “bestial metal” is arguably on life support, do Abysmal Lord return with their filthiest ‘n’ foulest creation, Exaltation of the Infernal Cabal. Not once betraying their original aims, so rudely and righteously portrayed across their Storms of Unholy Black Mass debut EP in 2014, Abysmal Lord simply stick to what they do best – utilizing the classic bestial metal schematic of OTT explosion and forward propulsion and then malforming it into morbid, miasmic shapes, always angular and antagonizing at every crooked turn – and deliver it with a fury and conviction that’s startling to behold. While no great changes have been made to that iron-clad aesthetic, if anything, Exaltation of the Infernal Cabal explodes with (and amazingly maintains) an urgency that somehow manages to revitalize the bestial metal idiom whilst following it to the rotten, black/white/red letter. And that’s to say nothing of the absolutely unhinged and frankly bonkers guitar soloing on display here; Abysmal Lord are truly exploring the most depraved depths of black/death.

A statement from the band reads: “The Abomination is born once again. Hail AntiMother, from whose foul loins drips the pestilence of mankind’s ruin. Come fiends and witches, Races of Jehovah’s Despair. Witness the pomp and fanfare of the victory procession and lose your soul in the Exaltation. Another pact is made over desecrated graves and rusted steel.”

The throne is corrupt; there steps forward Abysmal Lord, to assume their rightful place. Behold their Exaltation of the Infernal Cabal and tremble before unspeakable doom. And the US shall tremble soon, as Abysmal Lord have a grip of tour dates starting today (dates after the jump).

Hear the previously revealed “Scythe of Damnation” HERE at Hells Headbangers‘ Bandcamp, where the album can be preordered.

CEMETERY LIGHTS set release date for NUCLEAR WAR NOW! debut album, reveal first tracks

Today, Nuclear War Now! Productions sets September 7th as the international release date for Cemetery Lights‘ highly anticipated debut album, The Underworld, on CD and vinyl LP formats. The cassette tape version will be released earlier, on August 31st.

With its two demo EPs from 2018, Cemetery Lights rightfully gained the attention of the black metal underground for its atavistic approach that melded the sounds of various influences from decades-gone-by to produce an early body of work that somewhat resembled a newly-discovered series of recordings from the vault of Unisound Records. With its thematic focus on a ritual of exorcism from ancient Rome, the first of these demos, Lemuralia, demonstrated that the band not only worshipped the sound of mid ’90s Mediterranean black metal, but also the ancient history and literature of the region that helped set the stage for its birth many centuries before. Within a few months, Cemetery Lights released its second demo, The Church on the Island, which offered a somewhat more expanded glimpse of the full palette of the band’s inspirations and increased anticipation for what its first full-length would bring. Approximately one year later, this debut album is realized with the release of The Underworld on Nuclear War Now!

Composed of eight songs written primarily between 2009 and 2014, one would not necessarily expect The Underworld to take a step significantly beyond the two aforementioned demos, given that the tracks from these were composed and recorded at the same time. Nonetheless, the band’s sole member paid exceptional attention to writing and recording an album that would pay appropriate tribute to the worldwide influence of Greek literature over the past several millennia. Rather than rehashing themes that had already been explored by others previously, the goal was to delve into this mythology in a way that had not yet been done. As such, instead of paying homage to the characters in these narratives, The Underworld seeks to describe the realms that those characters occupied. Thus, the music and lyrics are paired, for example, to boldly proclaim the splendor of Olympos, the dread of Tartaros, and the melancholy of The Fields of Asphodel. This outcome was achieved in great effect through careful study of primary tomes, such as Homer’s The Odyssey and Hesiod’s Works and Days, as well as several other complementary texts.

Another significant way in which The Underworld differs substantially from the preceding demos is with the inclusion of live percussion. Having been a band consisting of a single member since the beginning, it was more convenient to use programmed percussion on the demos. For the album, on the other hand, additional effort was expended to learn how to properly record live drums, which was done along with all other instrumentation in the band’s private studio. The result is one which adds to the dramatic effect of the grandiose songwriting and contrasts sharply with the more sterile sound of programmed percussion.

With its thematic reference to Greece’s classic literature and its musical reverence of the country’s influence in black metal history, The Underworld stands out as a present-day example of an album that is much more than just a collection of songs written and performed in a similar vein, but instead a singular work that represents the ideal confluence of theme and music.

AKHLYS to release remastered debut through ANNAPURNA – fully streaming now

Today, AnnapurnA sets October 4th as the international release date for a reissue of Akhlys‘ cult debut album,  Supplication, on CD and vinyl LP formats.

Akhlys is yet another sonic exploration from the ultra-prolific Naas Alcameth, most known for Nightbringer and Bestia Arcana as well as Aoratos most recently and Temple of Not. Akhlys began as a means for Naas Alcameth to explore the darkest and most ritualistic corridors of the dark ambient genre, but later on moved in a more black metal direction with ambient textures incorporated. Supplication was the project’s debut album, originally released in 2009 on CD-R in an extremely limited edition; a proper CD version arrived in 2015, but also quite limited.

Now, AnnapurnA makes available a wider edition, remastered for both CD and, for the first time ever, vinyl, to meet the demands of Naas Alcameth’s ever-growing fanbase. On Supplication, enter with him into literally negative space: fold time and the mind through submerged tones and beyond-the-shade whispers, all making for a haunting experience beyond compare, all at the threshold of reality.

Break that threshold by streaming Supplication in full here:

APOKALYPTIC RAIDS set release date for new HELLS HEADBANGERS album – streaming now

Today, Hells Headbangers sets October 11th as the international release date for Apokalyptic Raids‘ highly anticipated fifth album, The Pentagram, on CD, vinyl LP, and cassette tape formats.

A veritable underground institution, Apokalyptic Raids have become a hallowed name among diehards the world over for one simple-but-special fact: they started as an unapologetic Hellhammer-worship band (and very early Celtic Frost, too) but have transcended their obvious influences into something that actually adds to that legendary canon rather than merely ripping it off. And, as of this year, they’ve been gloriously succeeding for 20 years now.

Although these Brazilian bastards have released a half-dozen EPs the last five years, it’s been a far-too-long eight years since the last Apokalyptic Raids album, Vol. 4 – Phonocopia, so to say that The Pentagram is long overdue is quite the understatement. And of course, they DELIVER, which is not surprising given that they’ve gone back to the classic 2004-2007 lineup of Leon Manssur “Necromaniac” on guitars and vocals, Vinicius Canabarro “Hellpreacher” on the bass, and Pedro Moraes Rocha “Skullkrusher” on the drums.

“The last 10 years have been a blast here,” explains Manssur. “We did extensive touring -Brazil three times, Europe twice, South America also twice, many one-off gigs – yet we stayed behind in renewing our discography. Don’t get me wrong – composition went on frantically. We took notes and demoed many ideas. Sincerely, this album is just a (new) beginning, and the next one is already on the make…”

Adorned with characteristically iconic artwork courtesy of close comrade Umberto, The Pentagram is indeed a new beginning, but one that reverently adheres to Apokalyptic Raids‘ iron-clad past. Perhaps not surprisingly, the album’s compositions span a good decade and a half – “There are songs from last year, and there are songs that were composed 10+ years ago,” Manssur reveals – but as always, it sounds 666% like Apokalyptic Raids. Tons of galloping hard-chargers, lots of dirtiness, more metal attitude than is healthy, and even a moody epic in closer “The Story of Pope Joan”: no fucking sellout, and no quarter given.

“With all the things that happened inside and outside the band, the idea of starting anew has grown up,” Manssur continues. “We hate those albums when the band thinks they have become more ‘mature’ and then…wimp out. Wimping out is a consequence of ego shit. No, not again in this scene today, not in 2018. Meanwhile, many bands of the 2000s generation went on to greatness, and that raised the ante in a way that pushed us forward.”

Within their now-sizable catalog, especially one so rich with rottenness, it’s both comforting and freshing that Apokalyptic Raids would make their long-awaited return to the full-length front one that’s purely “back to basics.” And it’s not just idly titled, either, as Manssur explains: “The new album being simply called The Pentagram is a statement of simplicity, less is more, keep it simple, rustic – whatever you call it. And yes, still tuned to E flat, so it’s safe to hear and being able to get the riffs. It’s all about the riff – old as fuck and fresh as fuck!”

He adds, “Of course we have took risks. There is an epic heavy metal song, like some pieces we did before, but with new twists. The planning was long, the execution was quick, and that’s it. We always try to get a good balance of ‘quick gratification,’ though not instant, and ‘risk.'”

Lastly, there are the lyrics to The Pentagram. Concludes Manssur, “Fenriz [Darkthrone etc] once wrote we were doing more personal lyrics. And that is true, given we are old metalheads full of shit, except that we don’t want to get stuck there and to preach too much. So, on this album, you will find statement after statement of ‘upward’ feelings – the words ‘victory’ and ‘triumph’ are recurring. Not that it could ever spoil the anger! Strange in a Hellhammer-worshiping band? Maybe, maybe not. And I love/hate playing a nameless style. It is and it is not black, death, heavy, speed, thrash, etc. It’s HELL. It’s HELL Music. Find that out, love it or hate it – danger is a good part of the fun.”

In the meantime, the entirety of The Pentagram is streaming

Greek black metal classicists Synteleia premiere new track

Today, Greek black metal classicists Synteleia premiere the new track “Ithaqua, thy Mighty Storm” The track hails from the band’s striking debut album, Ending of the Unknown Path, set for international release on August 30th via Hells Headbangers. Hear Synteleia‘s “Ithaqua, thy Mighty Storm” in its entirety HERE.
Although a relatively new band, Synteleia breathe the breath of the ancients and maintain an authentically classic Hellenic black metal style. Naturally, the influence of the Greek “Big Three” (Rotting Christ, Varathron, Necromantia) looms large, but also within the Synteleia sound can one detect traces of early Septic Flesh, Thou Art Lord, and Nightfall. Above all, despite being grounded in the early ’90s, Synteleia exhibit a vital fire and freshness of approach which makes Ending of the Unknown Path truly timeless.

Synteleia was founded in 2015 by guitarist Drakon Hesperion and vocalist Nyctelios. Being devoted followers of the Greek black metal scene for more than 20 years, they started composing original stuff, heavily influenced by the pioneers of the scene – Rotting Christ, Varathron, Horrified, Necromantia, Thou Art Lord, and more.

With the addition of Septis (bass/keys) and the assistance of Amdusias and Oort (also members of the Greek death metal band Plague), in June 2016, Synteleia entered the studio to record their first demo, Astral Blasphemies. In January 2017, the band made its debut appearance at the Extreme Assault II Festival at Modu club, Athens. In the summer of 2017, followed by a change in lineup, Cronios joined the band as the lead guitarist, and with the assistance of Nick “Yngve” on drums, the band started rehearsing for the Under the Pagan Moon Fest, taking place at Gagarin club, Athens, on November 4th, 2017, together with Kawir and Horn.

The recordings for the debut album, Ending of the Unknown Path, started in December 2017 and went until late summer 2018. During the recordings, Synteleia appeared at the Horns Up III Festival at Trikala and Black Death Holocaust Night at Remedy club, Athens. The band’s latest live performance has been at the Lords of the Void Festival at Temple club, Athens, on October 26th, 2018, with Varathron and Disharmony.

A statement from the band reads: “Synteleia are proud to announce Hells Headbangers Records to be our rightful partner, regarding the release of our debut album. We feel obligated to stay true to our ideals and beliefs, and cooperating with a genuine underground label that fully understands and supports our old-school Hellenic black metal aesthetics, taste, and philosophy feels the best way to repay all those who have entrusted us with their support and confidence. We are honored to be a member of HHR‘s unholy legions.”

Indeed, old-school Hellenic black metal aesthetics are alive and well with Synteleia as they take you to the Ending of the Unknown Path!

Chilean metal elite Slaughtbbath premiere new track

SLAUGHTBBATH premiere new track at CVLTNation.com

Today, Chilean metal elite Slaughtbbath premiere the new track “Amulets of Carnage” The track hails from the band’s long-awaited second album, Alchemical Warfare, set for international release on September 6th via Hells Headbangers. Hear Slaughtbbath‘s “Amulets of Carnage” in its entirety exclusively HERE.

SLAUGHTBBATH premiere new track at CVLTNation.com

For a decade and a half now, Slaughtbbath have prolifically pursued a fierce ‘n’ fiery vision of total black/death METAL. With a rich yet uniformly exemplary discography, this power-trio have laid waste to the underground across a myriad demos, splits, EPs, and 2013’s now-classic debut album, Hail to Fire. Allied with Hells Headbangers since 2016, a split 7″ with Grave Desecrator followed that summer, with September 2017 seeing the release of the Contempt, War and Damnation compilation, which precluded the band’s first-ever North American tour alongside fellow Chilean labelmates Communion.

Slaughtbbath have kept quiet since then, studiously brewing the firestorm that is Alchemical Warfare. A consolidation of the band’s beyond-considerable strengths as well as an extension of them, Alchemical Warfare was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Pablo Clares at DM6 studio in Santiago, Chile during 2017/2018. Here, Slaughtbbath are at the peak of their powers, pulsing with both bestiality and burliness alike, and yet exhibiting a nuanced songwriting nous that is second to none. Their sulfurous maelstrom is a veritable meat-grinder of South American darkness lo these past four decades, both reverent of the past whilst forging an even-darker future, and Alchemical Warfare finds the band hitting a fever pitch, its nine-song/36-minute runtime both succinct and satisfying. Each track invokes utter possession – a hypnotic diabolism, perhaps, in spite of the often-frantic tempos – but Slaughtbbath possess the prolific experience to convey that diabolism in a dynamic manner. If anything, Alchemical Warfare is the band’s best-produced record to date, and a survey of its song titles suitably convey the occultic austerity within: the title track, naturally, as well as the closing trifecta of “Amulets of Carnage,” “Celestial Overthrow,” and “Ascension to the Dragon’s Throne,” as well as the ever-epic “Rejoined Into Chaos.”

However, especially at this point in time and the career high-point that is Alchemical Warfare, it is important to underline the unique differences in Slaughtbbath makeup. For one, the band hail from San Vicente de Tagua Tagua, a small countryside town with no scene at all, whereas most Chilean bands hail from the bigger cities; in fact, early on, Slaughtbbath were branded “rural black metal” when they played live. Secondly and relatedly, they’ve not once ever strived to “sound South American,” much less do there exist any other Chilean bands doing a similar thing musically or lyrically. Lastly and perhaps most importantly, Slaughtbbath have maintained a solid lineup and kept up constant activity – both on record and on the live front – all these years while most bands disappear, fade, change members, come back, or form new bands with the same lineup to fit into the new trend. The Slaughtbbath name is thus iron-fisted, inexorable, and immaculate

With more eyes than ever on the Chilean black/death scene, it’s high time that the leaders separate themselves from the followers. Slaughtbbath firmly and furiously take the torch and lead the way forward with Alchemical Warfare.

The first torch can be witnessed with the previously revealed “Resuscitated by Immortal Scorn,” which can be heard both HERE at Hells Headbangers‘official YouTube channel as well at the label’s Bandcamp HERE, where the album can also be preordered.
