When Abbath announced that he had left IMMORTAL, it sent massive shockwaves through the metal scene. The iconic frontman had long become the “face” of the Norwegian black scene, his image synonymous with the genre. Upon releasing his debut album with his eponymous new band, ABBATH, in 2016, trve fans were satiated with a dose of icy, blackened fury.

Now, the Norwegian giant returns for round two, armed with a refined lineup and ready to strike with a sophomore effort that is sure to once again exceed the expectations of Abbath’s loyal fanbase. ‘Outstrider’ sees a maturation in sound, delivering a tighter, well-rounded offering from the band as they come into their own identity.

While there are moments that certainly channel the frosty hallmarks of IMMORTAL, there is no danger of ABBATH repeating that formula. ABBATH draws from NWOBM and melodic influences, adding a fresh new flavor to the sound that the band’s founder came to define.

‘Oustrider’ consists of eight, crushing original songs and concludes with a fiery BATHORY cover. The album promises a full-on aural assault from start to finish with frigid riffage and a robust pocket that are layered with vocals from one of the most identifiable voices in black metal. If you thought ABBATH came in hot with their last record, just wait until you hear this!

ZALMOXIS set release date for new SIGNAL REX mini-album

Today, Signal Rex sets January 31st as the international release date for an epic new mini-album from Zalmoxis, A Nocturnal Emanation, on cassette and single-sided 12″ vinyl formats.

Zalmoxis stands for storming and epic German Black Metal. Still early days, this concurrent project of Fortress of the Olden Days mainman Entheogen has so far released two demos – the latter of which, Pralayic Beheading, was released by brother label Harvest of Death. These early works suggested a restless soul steeped in the ancients, black metal of a most medieval vintage.

Now Zalmoxis strikes back with an ambitious 25-minute single track ominously bearing the title A Nocturnal Emanation. A none-more-apt description of its contents if there ever was one, here Entheogen patiently builds an ethereal-yet-thick fog of sorcerous swirl, its strangely alluring spell drowning the listener in dissonance and dislocated melody. And yet, despite its grandiose length, A Nocturnal Emanation manages to engage at every step, each one rife with grim abandon and on the verge of self-combustion but then righting itself into a surprising twist of texture. This misty ‘n’ mystical landscape beckons complete immersion…dare you enter?

An 11-minute edit/sample of the mini-album can be found here:

Italy’s VALGRIND sign with MEMENTO MORI – to release fourth album later this year

In their endless quest to push and support current underground acts that perpetuate the odor of vintage death metal, Memento Mori are extremely thrilled to announce a new signing: Valgrind, from Italy.   Valgrind was born from the ashes of the ultra-underground act Necrospell in 1993, as a death/black metal project with both extreme and melodic influences. Over the following years, the band released four demos and developed its own style, combining the main influences (Morbid Angel, Pestilence, Death, Nocturnus, Possessed, Monstrosity, Immolation) with a passion for the epically dark atmospheres of bands like Candlemass and early Paradise Lost.

Disbanded in 2003, the strong will to return on stage of both founding member / main songwriter Massimiliano Elia and vocalist Daniele Lupidi (also frontman of Hateful) made Valgrind‘s return possible in 2008. With the addition of new motivated members, the band released their debut full-length, Morning Will Come No More, in 2012. The album contained almost one hour of classic death metal filled with killer solos, memorable riffs and obscure vocals. Following the release, a series of shows were held in Italy, Germany, Holland, and Sweden. In 2016, the band delivered their sophomore full-length, Speech of the Flame, via Lord of the Flies Records. The music strayed away from some of the early influences to become more personal, while the lyrical concept dealt with the darkest sides of the ancient Mediterranean civilizations. An EP called Seal of Phobos followed in 2017, and only one year later, Valgrind delivered their third full-length, their most ambitious work to date, on Everlasting Spew Records. Blackest Horizon saw an increasing level of technicality in the guitar department, while retaining the old-school vibe of the previous works. Vocals became less guttural and more aggressive, while a more organic production gave the listener a wider musical spectrum to dive into. Again, the public was introduced to the new songs in some memorable shows, including Helsinki Deathfest in 2018.

Valgrind entered the studio in mid-2019 to record their fourth full-length. Lyrical inspiration for this new chapter comes from the myths of legendary creatures and beasts in various ancient cultures. Expect yet another lethal dose of old-school death metal with a unique touch!   Memento Mori will release the CD version of Valgrind‘s fourth full-length in late 2020 / early 2021. Further details to follow in the coming months.

Medico Peste reveal cover artwork and tracklist of ‘ב :The Black Bile’

MEDICO PESTE have furthermore released a track teaser for the song “God Knows Why”, which can be viewed here:
The cover artwork of  ‘ב :The Black Bile’ was created by Inside Flesh and can be found below, together with the tracklist.
Track List:
1. God Knows Why (08:25)
2. All Too Human (08:33)
3. Numinous Catastrophy (07:10)

5. Skin (06:37)
6. Holy Opium (05:48)
7. The Black Bile (06:45)
Total playing time: 0:50:06
In recent years, many Polish black metal bands have found their way to the forefront of the scene. Sharing live musicians with the titans of Mgła, MEDICO PESTE approach common narratives in black metal from a darker and more twisted state of mind than their contemporaries. The five-piece embrace a different look at death, religion, the Devil and his work, by exploring the distorted views of a tormented, neurotic subject and his schizophrenic visions.

MEDICO PESTE was originally formed in early 2010 by Lazarus (vocals) and Nefar (guitar), shortly after joined by The Fall (bass), EVT (guitar) and Priest (drums). The band released a demo in 2011 and shortly after followed up with the debut: ‘א: Tremendum et Fascinatio’. With this first full length, the Polish band impressed fans worldwide with their distinct approach to black metal.

In 2014 the band parted ways with Priest, replaced by The Fall for the recording of the EP ‘Herzogian Darkness’.  The acclaimed EP came out in 2017 and in that same year and Desolator joined the band as permanent drummer. MEDICO PESTE continued working on their second record and joined forces with Season of Mist’s Underground Activists sublabel to release ‘ב :The Black Bile’ in 2020.

Themes such as madness, religion and nihilism form the core part of the band’s lyrics, accompanied by music which emanates psychopathic rage, intertwined with a wide range of non-metal influences like post-punk, avantgarde and cabaret music. ‘ב :The Black Bile’ builds on a specific vision of madness revolving around butoh theatre, ecclesiogenic neurosis, schizophrenia, dark grotesque and Jungian archetypes. Beware when you enter these nightmarish visions, emanating from a contorted mind..

Line-up:
Lazarus – vocals, guitar
The Fall – guitar, bass
Nefar – guitar
E.V.T – guitar
Desolator – drums

CANNABIS CORPSE’s latest strain of weed-metal is another potent dose of bong ripping brutality laced with tasty riffs, vicious drumming, and powerful THC. With a title inspired by CRYPTOPSY’s seminal album, ‘Nug So Vile’ is a horrifying look into the mind of a hardcore marijuana abuser with the demented fantasies of a reefer addict fully on display. The record is more than just a mere follow up to 2017’s ‘Left Hand Pass’, but rather serves as a solid companion piece, seamlessly picking up right where the band left off.

Sharing a passion for marijuana and death metal, brothers Phil ‘Landphil’ Hall (MUNICIPAL WASTE, IRON REAGAN) and Josh ‘Hallhammer’ Hall formed CANNABIS CORPSE in 2006 in Richmond, VA as a loving homage to the genre’s forefathers. The brothers decided from the start to separate themselves from the pack by infusing a green sense of humour into their horror-inspired lyrics. Meanwhile, it has become a badge of honour for many of the Halls’ idols to have one of their titles parodied by the Richmond outfit.

Now, CANNABIS CORPSE has returned as a three-piece and despite slimming the line-up down since ‘Left Hand Pass’, ‘Nug So Vile’ still sounds as full and thick as ever, solidifying their place among death metal’s elite. So, roll a blunt, grab a neckbrace, and prepare yourself for another nasty assault from the kings of weed metal.

Finnish black metal mystics Aethyrick premiere new track

Today, Finnish black metal mystics Aethyrick premiere the new track “Stellar Flesh”. The track hails from the band’s highly anticipated second album, Gnosis, set for international release on January 24th via The Sinister Flame. Hear Aethyrick‘s “Stellar Flesh” in its entirety here:
Formed by Gall and Exile on the winter solstice 2016, Aethyrick‘s medium is black metal, methods uncomplicated and motives unknown. The Finnish duo proved their potency during the closing days of 2018 with their first full-length. Duly titled Praxis, indeed did it brim with a mysticism and magick that was simultaneously aeons-old and strikingly modern. A new classic in some circles but seemingly overlooked by the rest of the novelty-choked public, Praxis nevertheless laid firm a foundation upon which Aethyrick would most surely weave ever-more-grandiose spells.

“Magick isn’t simply something you do,” sagely says Exile, “it is what you must gradually BECOME.” Thus, witness: Aethyrick‘s second full-length spell, Gnosis. Immediately and recognizably Aethyrick from the very first notes to the ever-resounding last, Gnosis is a deceptively subtle spin in relation to its predecessor Praxis. In fact, one could almost argue that Gnosis‘ embrace is a warmer, more comforting one, its hanging ‘n’ somber melodicism pulling on the heartstrings in unusual (and some would say “uncomfortable”) ways. But, pull back this no-doubt-passionate development and one finds stark ‘n’ glittering BLACK METAL suffused with the same mysticism and magick that so endeared Praxis to the intrepid and intractable. More pointedly, Aethyrick‘s songwriting here has developed piecemeal layers that paradoxically lay even barer their stargazing, wanderlusting aims. It’s obsidian sonics for dreamers and rogues, theorists and realists. And it’s still 1000% black metal of a proudly purist stripe, for the duo of Gall and Exile choose to work within the idiom rather than without.

Time and again, charlatans and careerists have sought the latter route, their ruse – intended or not – fooling themselves and also so many of the said public. Aethyrick‘s eyes are wide open, their minds and hearts in kind, for they have seen Truth and borne witness to its liberating powers into The Beyond. And yet, this is but one mere step on their journey – fall into their stride with Gnosis!

Begin falling into that stride with the previously revealed “Oneiric Portals” HERE at the Black Metal Promotion YouTube channel.

Cover and tracklisting are as follows:
Tracklisting for Aethyrick’s Gnosis
1. Will Embodied
2. Oneiric Portals
3. Stellar Flesh
4. Your Mysteries
5. Blood Acre

ENTHRONED is surely a name black metal fans are no strangers to. Over the course of the last 25 years, they have pushed the boundaries of black metal and the deepness of the Left Hand Path philosophy further within. The quintet has channelled that dedication into their newest record. ‘Cold Black Suns’ is a dark and crushing black metal album where cold riffing, blood chilling atmospheres, and ritualistic drumming are keys to forging their most mature and accomplished opus to date.

The band, who crawled out of the black lands of Belgium in 1993, inked their first contract less than a year after its formation, and recorded debut album ‘Prophecies of Pagan Fire,’ which is now considered an all-time classic in the genre.

By then known as The Blackened Horde to fans and the scene at large, ENTHRONED recruited guitarist Nornagest and within 2 years entered Hautregard Studios to give birth to their second album. After the recording, tragedy struck and founding member and drummer Cernunnos (1997) took his own life.

The band went on to record the album using Cernunnos’s drum tracks from rehearsal recordings which were recorded by long time friend Da Cardoen, from the Belgian band ASPHYXIA. ‘Towards the Skullthrone of Satan’ was thus born. Since then, ENTHRONED went on to tour the world and have released a total of 10 full-lengths, one live album, and a hearty handful of splits and EPs.

Now, as the band celebrates 26 years as one of black metal’s premier outfits, they are ready to unleash number 11 onto the masses. ‘Cold Black Suns’ is an icy, brutal offering from the band that will see a worldwide release on June 7, 2019 via Season of Mist, making it their debut to the label. This is the band’s first album in five years, following up 2014’s critically acclaimed ‘Sovereigns.’

‘Cold Black Suns’ is one of 2019’s most anticipated releases and is certain to hold up to the hype that surrounds it, delivering an evolved and crushing offering from Belgium’s own black metal legends.
