NUPTA CADAVERA set release date for NUCLEAR WAR NOW! EP – includes members of Denmark’s Korpsånd Circle

Today, Nuclear War Now! Productions sets September 15th as the international release date for Nupta Cadavera‘s striking debut EP, Nupta Cadavera, on 7″ vinyl format.

With this debut EP, Nupta Cadavera make a defiant proclamation of purpose. The membership of the band is largely unknown, except that it is comprised of an international group of musicians, including members of the Korpsånd Circle in Denmark. Gaining wider recognition in the last few years, the many bands affiliated with Korpsånd and their Mayhem venue/rehearsal space have collectively broadened the spectrum of the Danish black metal scene. 

The two songs on this self-titled EP possess a distinctive approach, one that reflects a self-annihilating synthesis of sounds commingled. The band’s name draws upon this trait. “Nupta Cadavera,” Latin for “marriage with a corpse,” signifies the union of the living with the dead, the twin pillars of existence, entangled, symmetrically braided. The two tracks feature the gilded glint of guitars, metallic and bold, crashing together and coiled around the melodic thrust of the keyboards, the two elements at times clashing in a brassy display of internecine discordance. Nested within the compositional armature of the songs, the vocals, desperate and grim, break the tension. The dissonance is then sculpted in the service of songs that are punchy, succinct, and imminently listenable, immediately commanding repeat plays. 

It is difficult to reconcile the quality of these songs with the fact that this is the band’s debut recording, and one hopes more will soon follow.

DENIAL OF GOD set release date for new OSMOSE / HELLS HEADBANGERS album – reveal cover, tracklisting

At long last, legendary black metallers Denial of God return with their LONG-awaited third album, The Hallow Mass! Set to be jointly released by Osmose Productions and Hells Headbangers on October 25th, The Hallow Mass was preceded by the short ‘n’ sweet The Shapeless Mass EP in June, which stoked the fires for yet more new recordings since 2012’s Death and the Beyond. To say that this album is massively anticipated and very long overdue would be quite the understatement! 

By now, Denial of God should need little introduction. Since that fateful year of 1991, the brothers Azter and Ustumallagam have perfected an idiosyncratic style of black metal that’s positively drenched in the supernatural and remains firm in their conviction of more classicist-styled songwriting. In fact, “black metal” might even be a misnomer; rather, BLACK HORROR METAL would be more accurate. 

This past June, Denial of God – utilizing the same lineup that’s been firm since 2005, with Azter and Ustumallagam joined by Galheim – released the critically acclaimed The Shapeless Mass EP, which served as a special teaser for the full-length The Hallow Mass. With that EP’s title track intended as a springboard for LP#3’s themes and aesthetics, Denial of God proceed to return in grand, GRAND form with The Hallow Mass, reminding those legions just why their brand of Black Horror Metal is so special whilst uncovering new, undead ground. 

Recorded once again at Berno Studio, where the previous two albums and several EPs were recorded, The Hallow Mass is indeed a MASSIVE experience, comprising seven epic-length tracks in an incredibly visual 63 minutes – or put more accurately, six central songs and one intermezzo, underlining Denial of God‘s undeniably cinematic approach to metal. Indeed, within that cinematic experience lays the band’s most varied and diverse album to date, and boldly do they begin with the 15-minute sorta-title track “Hallowmas,” which includes a compelling middle section consisting solely of keyboards – even more bold for Denial of God, as they generally end their albums with the longest track. Nevertheless, The Hallow Mass ends on a high note with the straightforward-yet-twisted “The Transylvanian Dream,” and in between those two tracks do the trio somewhat subvert their trademark melancholy: more aggressive overall than, say, the solemn Death and the Beyond, but dive deeper into the material and discover that same strong sense of melancholy, built upon their characteristic horror aesthetic and theatrical performance. Of course, backed by outstanding drumming from Galheim, frontman Ustumallagam gives another commanding performance which further underlines Denial of God‘s ever-unique nature: raw, blackened vocals that never become senseless screaming, but which actually make the lyrics relatively easy to understand and penetrate the listener’s consciousness. 

Topped off by stunningly atmospheric full-gatefold artwork by Markus Vesper, who delivered the unforgettable art for Death and the Beyond, Denial of God‘s The Hallow Mass is the timely return of true BLACK HORROR METAL!

French Lovecraftian black metal masters THE GREAT OLD ONES have revealed a lyric video for the song “Nyarlathotep”, taken from their upcoming record ‘Cosmicism’

Channelling the spirit and literary heritage of author H.P. Lovecraft, French Atmospheric black metallers THE GREAT OLD ONES have returned with their most impressive work to date. ‘Cosmicism’ lures the listener deeper into darkness with intricate, beautiful and twisted melodies, ultimately encompassing them with madness.
                                                                                         
THE GREAT OLD ONES emerged in 2009 from the old parts of the ancient Aquitanian harbour city of Bordeaux, FRANCE, a city famed for its secrets and deep red wine. After releasing their first album, ‘Al Azif,’ the reactions of critics and fans were unanimously positive.  
 
The band followed up with their second full-length, ‘Tekeli-li,’ which garnered even higher praise. As a result, THE GREAT OLD ONES played a show at the acclaimed Roadburn festival, opened for BEHEMOTH in their homeland, played at Hellfest, and supported label mates SHINING and DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT.
 
The third full length, ‘EOD – A Tale of Dark Legacy,’ (2017) marked another big step in the band’s fast rising career. The five-piece took the road with the legendary GAAHLS WYRD and embarked on a successful European co-headline tour with label mates AUÐN from Iceland. THE GREAT OLD ONES also appeared on the billing of respected festivals, such as Brutal Assault and Eindhoven Metal Meeting, in front of a gigantic crowd of cultists.
 
Now, the French worshippers of Cthulhu reveal their fourth offering to the old ones. “Cosmicism” is a literary philosophy developed by H.P. Lovecraft. The idea behind “Coscmicism” is that humans are godless creatures who are totally insignificant in the grand scheme of our cosmic universe.
 
The production of this album was entrusted to Francis Caste (SINSAENUM, LOUDBLAST, SVART CROWN, REGARDE LES HOMMES TOMER, HANGMAN’S CHAIR) of the Studio Sainte-Marthe, who managed to capture the singular essence of THE GREAT OLD ONES.
 
The record is a true journey in the cold deep of space. Each song features a Lovecraftian entity and parallel the dark destiny of the protagonist who meets her and in turn, slowly succumbs to admiration and madness. Lyrics inspired by H.P. REIGN IN BLOOD stream IRON BONEHEAD comeback album

Today, German black metal sorcerors Reign in Blood stream their long-awaited comeback album, Missa Pro Defunctis, . Set for international release on August 16th via Iron Bonehead Productions, hear Reign in Blood‘s Missa Pro Defunctis in its entirety here.
Staunchly German, Reign in Blood formed in Saxony in the dark days of 2004. Largely steered by founding vocalist/guitarist Demon Raise and drummer Athanasius, the band soon assaulted the black metal underground with a demo, a split, and an EP, all between 2006-2007. Then, in 2009, came Reign in Blood‘s cult debut album, Diabolical Katharsis, and they then seemingly receded into the shadows, as violently as they originally burst forth from them.

Athanassius and bassist Asuras left Reign in Blood to focus on their own projects, and Demon Raise was unable to celebrate the band like in the early days because of personality reasons. Demon Raise and fellow guitarist Deus made a decision to put the band on ice for an indefinite time – but the impulse to create music again never died. And so, at the end of 2016, Reign in Blood began rehearsing again. In short time, it was clear that a new album must be made.

Alas, longtime fans Iron Bonehead are honored to hoist the banners of Reign in Blood‘s surprise comeback with the LONG-awaited second album, Missa Pro Defunctis. Truly “old-soul black metal,” there is nothing trendy nor nice about Reign in Blood‘s attack here: featuring both ultraviolence and melody, hammering primitivism and fleet-footed complexity, haunting atmospheres and dizzying delirium, Missa Pro Defunctis is an album of stark contrasts that somehow is threaded together with the most elusive ‘n’ sulfurous magick.

Fittingly recorded at Old Spirit Studio with mixing & mastering courtesy of the esteemed Patrick Engel at Temple of Disharmony, Reign in Blood‘s return also elusively locates a soundfield that’s both rudely raw and clear, cutting, and nuanced in a disarmingly professional manner – again, further underlining how elusive and sulfurous these Germans’ magick is. It’s been four long years since Abysmal Lord‘s cult debut album for Hells HeadbangersDisciples of the Inferno. In that time, the bestial metal resurgence has hit maximum occupancy, and each new pretender to the throne sadly waters down the atavistic power the subgenre once held, neutering the cruel ‘n’ caustic counterpoint bestial metal offers to the increasingly safe “black metal” scene. Also during that time, while Abysmal Lord have only delivered one scant recording – a split 7″ with equally stout bestial comrades Crurifragium, released last year via Hells Headbangers – the Louisiana natives haven’t sat idly by, taking to many a stage across the United States and unleashing their war command upon more and newer audiences.

Now, when “bestial metal” is arguably on life support, do Abysmal Lord return with their filthiest ‘n’ foulest creation, Exaltation of the Infernal Cabal. Not once betraying their original aims, so rudely and righteously portrayed across their Storms of Unholy Black Mass debut EP in 2014, Abysmal Lord simply stick to what they do best – utilizing the classic bestial metal schematic of OTT explosion and forward propulsion and then malforming it into morbid, miasmic shapes, always angular and antagonizing at every crooked turn – and deliver it with a fury and conviction that’s startling to behold. While no great changes have been made to that iron-clad aesthetic, if anything, Exaltation of the Infernal Cabal explodes with (and amazingly maintains) an urgency that somehow manages to revitalize the bestial metal idiom whilst following it to the rotten, black/white/red letter. And that’s to say nothing of the absolutely unhinged and frankly bonkers guitar soloing on display here; Abysmal Lord are truly exploring the most depraved depths of black/death.

A statement from the band reads: “The Abomination is born once again. Hail AntiMother, from whose foul loins drips the pestilence of mankind’s ruin. Come fiends and witches, Races of Jehovah’s Despair. Witness the pomp and fanfare of the victory procession and lose your soul in the Exaltation. Another pact is made over desecrated graves and rusted steel.”

The throne is corrupt; there steps forward Abysmal Lord, to assume their rightful place. Behold their Exaltation of the Infernal Cabal and tremble before unspeakable doom. And the US shall tremble soon, as Abysmal Lord have a grip of tour dates starting today (dates after the jump).

CEMETERY LIGHTS set release date for NUCLEAR WAR NOW! debut album, reveal first tracks

Today, Nuclear War Now! Productions sets September 7th as the international release date for Cemetery Lights‘ highly anticipated debut album, The Underworld, on CD and vinyl LP formats. The cassette tape version will be released earlier, on August 31st.

With its two demo EPs from 2018, Cemetery Lights rightfully gained the attention of the black metal underground for its atavistic approach that melded the sounds of various influences from decades-gone-by to produce an early body of work that somewhat resembled a newly-discovered series of recordings from the vault of Unisound Records. With its thematic focus on a ritual of exorcism from ancient Rome, the first of these demos, Lemuralia, demonstrated that the band not only worshipped the sound of mid ’90s Mediterranean black metal, but also the ancient history and literature of the region that helped set the stage for its birth many centuries before. Within a few months, Cemetery Lights released its second demo, The Church on the Island, which offered a somewhat more expanded glimpse of the full palette of the band’s inspirations and increased anticipation for what its first full-length would bring. Approximately one year later, this debut album is realized with the release of The Underworld on Nuclear War Now!

Composed of eight songs written primarily between 2009 and 2014, one would not necessarily expect The Underworld to take a step significantly beyond the two aforementioned demos, given that the tracks from these were composed and recorded at the same time. Nonetheless, the band’s sole member paid exceptional attention to writing and recording an album that would pay appropriate tribute to the worldwide influence of Greek literature over the past several millennia. Rather than rehashing themes that had already been explored by others previously, the goal was to delve into this mythology in a way that had not yet been done. As such, instead of paying homage to the characters in these narratives, The Underworld seeks to describe the realms that those characters occupied. Thus, the music and lyrics are paired, for example, to boldly proclaim the splendor of Olympos, the dread of Tartaros, and the melancholy of The Fields of Asphodel. This outcome was achieved in great effect through careful study of primary tomes, such as Homer’s The Odyssey and Hesiod’s Works and Days, as well as several other complementary texts.

Another significant way in which The Underworld differs substantially from the preceding demos is with the inclusion of live percussion. Having been a band consisting of a single member since the beginning, it was more convenient to use programmed percussion on the demos. For the album, on the other hand, additional effort was expended to learn how to properly record live drums, which was done along with all other instrumentation in the band’s private studio. The result is one which adds to the dramatic effect of the grandiose songwriting and contrasts sharply with the more sterile sound of programmed percussion.

With its thematic reference to Greece’s classic literature and its musical reverence of the country’s influence in black metal history, The Underworld stands out as a present-day example of an album that is much more than just a collection of songs written and performed in a similar vein, but instead a singular work that represents the ideal confluence of theme and music.

AKHLYS to release remastered debut through ANNAPURNA – fully streaming now

Akhlys is yet another sonic exploration from the ultra-prolific Naas Alcameth, most known for Nightbringer and Bestia Arcana as well as Aoratos most recently and Temple of Not. Akhlys began as a means for Naas Alcameth to explore the darkest and most ritualistic corridors of the dark ambient genre, but later on moved in a more black metal direction with ambient textures incorporated. Supplication was the project’s debut album, originally released in 2009 on CD-R in an extremely limited edition; a proper CD version arrived in 2015, but also quite limited.

Now, AnnapurnA makes available a wider edition, remastered for both CD and, for the first time ever, vinyl, to meet the demands of Naas Alcameth’s ever-growing fanbase. On Supplication, enter with him into literally negative space: fold time and the mind through submerged tones and beyond-the-shade whispers, all making for a haunting experience beyond compare, all at the threshold of reality.
