OFDRYKKJA set release date for new AOP RECORDS album, reveal first video

Today, AOP Records announces November 25th as the international release date for Ofdrykkja‘s highly anticipated fourth album, After the Storm, on CD and vinyl LP formats. To coincide with the announcement, a brand-new video for the first single “The Mære” is revealed here:

It is no secret that the music of Ofdrykkja has never sounded quite the same. As the Swedish trio strive to keep evolving on a personal level, this is naturally reflected in their music, as well. While 2019’s preceding Gryningsvisor was more of a traditional atmospheric/ambient black metal album, the aptly titled After the Storm ventures away, off the beaten path, and proceeds to distance itself from some of the more traditional elements that are usually prominent in metal music. 

At once recognizably Ofdrykkja and something quite different altogether, the ever-solemn After the Storm plaintively emphasizes the band’s traditional Swedish folk side, along the way incorporating elements of post-rock, neofolk, and even dark pop. Mesmerizing and magical is this blend, but the band’s roots are never far away; in fact, Ofdrykkja argue the spirit of metal is still prominent across After the Storm. Naturally, the somber mood and atmosphere is one thing that has remained constant in their music throughout the years, and that is unlikely to change anytime soon, but never without the presence of hope. After the Storm gorgeously displays this presence, becoming a beam of light piercing through the darkness. Call Ofdrykkja what you will, but even at their quietest and most restrained, their power and poignancy is unchallenged.

KRVNA set release date for new THIRD EYE TEMPLE / ANCIENT DEAD album, reveal first track

On December 12th internationally, Third Eye Temple and Ancient Dead Productions are proud to present Krvna‘s highly anticipated second album, For Thine is the Kingdom of the Flesh, on CD format. The tape version will be directly available from the band.

Perhaps laying in wait, below deck on a cursed coffin ship, a vampyric entity stirred and soon spread its black-leather wings in the autumn of 2021: Krvna‘s debut demo, appropriately titled Long Forgotten Relic, introduced the Australian black metallers in a most auspicious manner. However, that demo was but a mere two songs, and a few months later did the band’s debut album follow. Titled Sempinfernus, Krvna‘s first full-length unveiled the full fathom of mainman Krvna Vatra’s vision. At once authentically classic and unblinkered by the past, Sempinfernus was a sparkling gem of refreshingly old (and refreshingly vast) air, their black metal laced with a mysticism and sumptuousness that could only be likened to purple velvet. Not for nothing was it widely acclaimed.

Now, like (cursed) clockwork, Krvna return a full year later with arguably an even greater record: second album For Thine is the Kingdom of the Flesh. Immediately, the aggression is more tangible, more restless, but so is the grandiosity as six equally epic compositions unfold and take flight. Indeed, the sensation of flight is an apt one; racing and roiling with a blastbeaten intensity, there’s simultaneously a hovering – if not entirely ethereal – aspect that plays perfect counterpoint to that emphatic violence. Truly, Krvna‘s attack swarms here, sounds rippling and reverberating across a ruined cathedral, but executed with startling clarity: you’d be hard pressed to find a better-produced authentic black metal record these days. While certainly one can’t dress up a turd and call it a gem, Krvna Vatra’s superlative songwriting prowess receives the proper sonic presentation, and that synthesis of form and content makes all the difference in rendering For Thine is the Kingdom of the Flesh an engaging and engrossing experience on all levels. That the mainman’s lyrical themes delve deeper into philosophical concepts surrounding existential dread, vampirism, immortality, and transubstantiation only give greater weight to making this Krvna‘s defining statement thus far.

FUNERAL HARVEST premiere new track – features members of BEYOND MAN, NATHR+++

Today, Norwegian/Italian black metallers  Funeral Harvest premiere the new track “Principum et Finis”. The track is the second to be revealed from the band’s highly anticipated debut album, Redemptio, set for international release on October 31st via Signal Rex. A pan-international quartet featuring members from Norway and Italy, Funeral Harvest formed in 2016 and unleashed their first public recording the very next year. Tellingly titled Bunker Ritual Rehearsal, this first strike was auspicious to say the very least, and quickly built a name for Funeral Harvest in the underground. Their raw ‘n’ robust black metal sound was rooted in the ancient ways but never regressive – in fact, its ghoulish hostility was perversely refreshing. An epic digital single followed in 2019, but it was 2020’s self-titled EP, released to widespread acclaim by Signal Rex, where Funeral Harvest indeed began to reap: a grim ‘n’ graven culmination of all that’s come before and all that lies ahead. 

And now, “what lies ahead” is finally here with Funeral Harvest‘s first full-length. Elegantly titled Redemptio, the band’s debut album is grand and garish, ceremonial and seditious, in equal measure. With a rejuvenated lineup that features erstwhile Beyond Man guitarist alongside vocalist/guitarist Lord Nathas, bassist &alt;, and drummer Ond, Funeral Harvest‘s attack continues to be undeniably physical, but whereas a wobbly between hypnotic possession and demonic headbanging took hold prior, Redemptio races and rewinds from nearly chaotic violence to smoked-choked repose, creating a delirium that’s impossible to resist. That the exceptionally professional production seemingly amplifies this swarming sensation is only part of spellbinding potion; at every (crooked) turn, there exists a bestial impulse barely tamed, but the order in which they’re delivered is anything but random. Razor-sharp songwriting is at a premium, then, as Funeral Harvest judiciously keep their constructions taut and terrorizing: the nine-song album races to the finish in a swift-yet-satisfying 31 minutes.

Both more ghoulish and muscular than ever, Funeral Harvest revitalize elder expressions of Norwegian black metal with Redemptio. Kneel and receive their sacrament.

OFERMOD set release date for new SHADOW mini-album, reveal new track – features MARDUK member

Today, Shadow Records (distributed & marketed by Regain Records) announces November 25th as the international release date for a brand-new mini-album from Ofermod, Ofermodian Litanies, on CD and cassette tape formats. The vinyl LP version is expected for release on January 20th, 2023.

By now, Ofermod should require no introduction. Formed back in the dark days of 1996, the band released their debut EP, Mystérion Tés Anomias, in 1998. Although a mere two songs, Ofermod’s opening salvo sowed the seeds for the orthodox black metal movement that would begin to blossom in the new millennium, alongside fellow Shadow Records alumni Funeral Mist and Malign. Crime and chaos followed mainman Belfagor everywhere he went, and the band’s momentum remained halted. However, Ofermod eventually became a working entity again, starting with 2008’s Tiamtü full-length, and through magick and will did more recordings follow: Thaumiel (2012), the two-song Serpents’ Dance EP (2014), Sol Nox (2017), and the posthumous Pentagrammaton, originally intended to be the band’s debut album. And just last year, a renewed and reinvigorated Ofermod released the acclaimed full-length Mysterium Iniquitatus.


Each Ofermod recording always put forth a pivotal piece of their ever-evolving puzzle – ever the same, yet always different – and so it goes with the forthcoming mini-album Ofermodian Litanies. Something of a “double EP,” Ofermodian Litanies features two brand-new songs recorded with the lineup of Belfagor on vocals, guitar, and bass and Marduk’s Simon “Bloodhammer” Schilling on drums; two tracks from the aforementioned Serpents’ Dance EP, long out of print; and an unreleased version of the title track to Tiamtü. The two new tracks with Schilling on drums impart a stately mania that moves from grim strut to ghoulish fury, with Belfagor’s vocals always a hackle-raising centerpiece. Although many years removed and with a lineup that would carry forward to Sol Nox, the two Serpents’ Dance tracks hold up exceptionally well, finding Ofermod at their ugliest and arguably most rabble-rousing – the hooligan to the ritualist, if you will. Recorded during those same sessions, the unreleased version of “Tiamtü” holds the same slow-burn intensity of the original, with the ritualist here perhaps replacing the hooligan. All material here was recorded, produced, and mastered by Magnus “Devo” Andersson at Endarker Studios, keeping the totality intact.

Compact yet somehow still expansive, Ofermodian Litanies is aptly titled. Ofermod illuminate both the past and present!

BUNKER 66 premiere new track from new split mini-album with Germany’s LUCIFUGE to be released via DYING VICTIMS

On October 21st internationally, Dying Victims Productions will release Of Night and Lust, a special split mini-album between Bunker 66 and Germany’s Lucifuge, on CD and 12” vinyl formats. And today, we premiere Bunker 66‘s new track “Mellhammer.” Hear Bunker 66‘s “Mellhammer” in its entirety here:

Both Bunker 66 and Lucifuge should be familiar names to those versed in the dark deeds of Dying Victims: Just earlier this year, Bunker 66 released through the label a split 7” with fellow Italian filth-bangers Hellcrash, as well as their long-awaited (and rightly celebrated) fourth album, Beyond the Help of Prayers, earlier in 2021; for their part, Lucifuge released their equally celebrated fourth album, Infernal Power, through Dying Victims during the spring of 2021. Here on Of Night and Lust, both bands each deliver three exclusive songs, making for 24 minutes of ancient speed metal sleaze and metalpunk ghoulishness.

Bunker 66 are up first and show no signs of slowing down, especially so after 15 years as a band now. “Mellhammer” and “Sulphurous Lust” are exemplary displays of their greasy speed-metal surge, and yet subtly exude an eerie aspect that perhaps point the way forward for future recordings. Capping their entry is a faithful cover of Motörhead’s “Doctor Rock,” which both underlines Bunker 66’s roots as well as reverently paying respect to the fallen gods of Lemmy and Würzel. Lucifuge follow with an even-more-blackened iteration of their etched-in-stone metalpunk across the tracks “The Great Unseen” and “In Blood and Dust.” They conclude with a surprising-yet-storming anthem fittingly titled “Warriors of the Night.” While many metal anthems have been attempted under such a title, you’ve truly never heard one as invigorating as this – nor Lucifuge so bright and brassy!

SORGETID set release date for WEREWOLF debut, reveal cover & tracklisting – features members of VARGRAV, DRUADAN FOREST, GRIEVE, EMBRYONIC SLUMBER+++

Today, Werewolf Records announce November 11th as the international release date for Sorgetid‘s highly anticipated debut album, Natt av Tusen Dödsfall, on CD and cassette tape formats. The vinyl LP version will follow next year.

Sorgetid exclusively play Nordic black metal, from Finland. The name Sorgetid may be new, but the creator behind it isn’t: Finnish underground veteran V-Khaoz, renown for such bands as Vargrav, Druadan Forest, Grieve, and Embryonic Slumber among many others, stretching back to the late ’90s. With Sorgetid itself, V-Khaoz indeed delves even deeper (and earlier) into the ’90s, presenting vintage obsidian, both style- and production-wise, that respects the now-ancient time when black metal was only made by individuals who were truly dedicated to it. “In my reality, no other kind of black metal exists,” he firmly states.

Truly, the evidence is there with Sorgetid‘s first public recording, the full-length Natt av Tusen Dödsfall. Endearingly and engagingly familiar yet done with the deft nous for which V-Khaoz is known, Sorgetid‘s first salvo is based purely on intuition and the man’s need “to get quite old stuff out of my head – no future, no past.” Existing within those reverently stringent boundaries, Natt av Tusen Dödsfall unveils a landscape rife with melancholy and madness, nostalgia and nightsky mysticism, fury and wonder woven together with elder chainmail forged in the fires of olde. Eight songs across 37 minutes are more than sufficient to paint the atmospheres and sensations that seemingly exist out of time. The album’s no less raw nor polished than it needs to be; rather, it IS, unyielding and undying. 

No references required here – as ever, V-Khaoz’s work stands tall on it its own – but for those who still hold dark medieval times in their hearts, Sorgetid‘s Natt av Tusen Dödsfall poignantly offers a portal to those glorious times.

RIENAUS set release date for new KVLT album, reveal first track – features members of AZAZEL+++

Today, KVLT announces November 25th as the international release date for Rienaus‘ highly anticipated third album, Luciferille.

Formed in 2009 and led by the iron fist of erstwhile Azazel member Mavrofos, Rienaus have quietly built a sizable catalog of paradigmatic Finnish black metal. With two albums, three demos, an EP, a split album, and even a live record to their blasphemous name, Rienaus have dependably and doggedly pursued their vision with nary a misstep: so pure, so cold, traditional Finnish hunger – no more, but definitely less. An idiom doesn’t “need” anything when it is already in its perfect state.

And so it goes with Rienaus‘ third album, Luciferille. Immediately, those chill winds of melodic mysticism blow across this tight ‘n’ concise 35-minute record: freezing fire fueled by unfiltered emotion and inner darkness, performed with a conviction one can truly FEEL. As ever, Mavrofos finds that ever-elusive production style that’s both clear ‘n’ shimmering and just a bit roughed-up and raw, allowing the subtly spiraling guitar parts to take hold of the listener’s soul and whip him into a hypnosis of transcendental proportions. However, whereas the hallmarks of the classic Finnish black metal sound are present – both pulsing gallop and hateful headbang, shifting with ease and when the album’s seven central songs call for it – Rienaus manage to explore (subtly, effortlessly) a number of dynamics not often found alongside such tropes, like downtempo clang and almost-motorik grind. But, of course, Luciferille sounds and feels BLACK METAL above all.

To restate the obvious, Finnish black metal doesn’t need to “be” anything more than it already is, and Rienaus deeply understand this intrinsic truth. Discover that truth – again, or for the first time – with Luciferille.

FIRTAN reveal third track from new AOP RECORDS album – also to tour next month

Today, German atmospheric black metallers Firtan reveal the new track “Faðir.“ The track is the third single from the band’s highly anticipated third album, Marter, set for international release on September 30th via AOP Records. Hear Firtan‘s “Faðir here:

Since their fortuitous formation in 2010, Firtan have been dedicated to a unique strain of extreme metal and have steadily built an enraptured audience across countless shows in their native Germany and abroad. Granted, the band’s roots lay in black metal, particularly those pivotal days of the 1990s, but over the course of two acclaimed albums – 2014’s Niedergang and especially 2018’s Okeanos – Firtan have effortlessly integrated an eclecticism that has become more self-contained and increasingly kaleidoscopic. Now, they arguably deliver their masterwork: Marter.

Immediately, the trademark Firtan sound is felt – riffing that’s raging yet gorgeous, atmosphere that’s autumnal yet cliche-free, compositions that span epic lengths yet remain judiciously compact – and Marter stuns after first listen. However, delve deeper and you’ll find that Firtan have become more daring in their soundfield, incorporating more acoustics, synths, and strings to flesh out that always-poignant atmosphere. Amazingly, the band never busy up that soundfield; everything sounds rich and robust but in its proper place, every tone resounding endlessly through the soul. That Firtan take Marter in sometimes diametrically opposed directions – violent vs. restrained, explosive vs. placid, righteously black metal vs. something approaching neoclassical – often all during the course of a song, speaks to the band’s masterful approach to songwriting. Some might even liken Marter to “post-black metal,” which is okay with them: Firtan are simply performing their own interpretation of black metal. 

Fittingly, the theme of Marter deals with the isolation of the modern individual who finds himself torn between spiritual hope and existential failure – and Firtan vividly paint this panorama in their most dazzling hues yet. And just like its massive predecessor, Marter was recorded at the esteemed studio Klangschmiede E with Markus Stock of The Vision Bleak/Empyrium. Completed by grandiose cover art courtesy of Władysław Podkowiński, Marter is a milestone of the dynamic German black metal scene – and Firtan have arrived as reigning kings.

Today, Austrian black metallers Theotoxin reveal the new track “Towards the Chasm.” The track is the second single from the band’s highly anticipated fourth album, Fragment : Totenruhe, set for international release on October 28th via AOP Records. Hear Theotoxin‘s “Towards the Chasm” here:

With the intention of creating supreme black metal art, Theotoxin ascended from the catacombs of Vienna in 2016 and consists of experienced individuals exclusively. The brand-new album Fragment : Totenruhe will be their second strike under the banner of AOP Records and a worthy successor to the 2020 album Fragment : Erhabenheit. 

Marking a total number of four full-lengths since the founding days, Theotoxin stand for longevity, continuity, and ongoing advancement. Theotoxin are a guarantor for intense live performances and deliver an unprecedented show with deep-yet-aggressive atmosphere. With plenty of live appearances and a tour through Europe accomplished so far, the band is eager to spread their black chants even further.

Finnish Black Metallers CELESTIAL GRAVE stream new THE SINISTER FLAME album

Today, Finnish black metallers Celestial Grave stream the entirety of their highly anticipated second album, Vitriolic Atonement. Set for international release on September 23rd – the autumn equinox – via The Sinister Flame, hear Celestial Grave’s Vitriolic Atonement in its entirety here:

Since their public unveiling in 2016 with the hideous & haunting Burial Ground Trance demo, Finland’s Celestial Grave have been steadily perfecting a craft that already arrived fully formed. While the band’s brand of black metal does bear some semblance to certain sectors of their native land’s long-running and -esteemed scene, Celestial Grave largely unshackle themselves from “Finnish black metal” and locate a muse that’s uniquely focused and fiercely personal. Such was the case with the epic four-song Secular Flesh debut album in 2019, and now, three years later, that case is even stronger with their second album, Vitriolic Atonement.

“Vitriolic Atonement is a sonic and visual exploration of the dreadful yet beautiful aspects of life and death,” they begin. “It was a comprehensive work for us, where not only the music and lyrics but also the artwork were really central from the start.”
 
Indeed, lose thyself in the hypnotic layers of that cover art and you’ll begin to understand the experience that awaits within Vitriolic Atonement. As such, Vitriolic Atonement is a full-album experience that’s paradoxically more approachable and more alien: allow that wounded melodicism into your soul, all enticingly come-hither, and then witness the swirlingly obsidian rot spread.
