ASTRIFEROUS stream ME SACO UN OJO / PULVERISED debut album

Today, Costa Rican death metallers Astriferous stream the entirety of their highly anticipated debut album, Pulsations From the Black Orb. Set for international release on March 10th – Me Saco Un Ojo Records will handle the vinyl version while Pulverised Records will handle the CD version – hear AstriferousPulsations From the Black Orb in its entirety here:

Two demos, one split, one MLP: these are the releases Astriferous have already left an impression with. But now, this Costa Rican death metal juggernaut is back with their full-length studio debut, Pulsations From the Black Orb.

Decay, despair, and bubbling rot come to the surface with the abhorrent opening piece. Setting a gargantuan monolith to crumble before us, the intensity is high even before we truly begin. Roaring vocals and meaty riffs stain the air as pummeling drums bludgeon the skull to smithereens. The raw and ineffably dark production is one that will immediately leave non-diehards running with their tails between their legs. But those who can hack the savage attack of the senses will hear some truly phenomenal, atmospheric, and yet unforgiving death metal that spews rot and hacks limbs while some cleverly placed riffs give a very uncomfortable ambience to the whole thing. The gripping and unique approach is delivered at high-tempos to ensure maximum damage while some gloomier passages give a rich, textured, and hauntingly ghastly dynamic to the record. Blending the cacophonous Finnish death metal titans of old with some South American deathrashing violence, Astriferous conjure an atmosphere and sound entirely of their own while reading from the ancient tomes of morbidity.

Firing on all cylinders, this record is an amalgamation of the band’s best works. The doomy parts are more spectral than ever, the bestial aggression is unrivalled in savagery, and the progression as putrescent as one could dream of. Those who have followed the Astriferous journey can revel in the splendor that they have reached here with their best achievement to date. New maniacs can be won over by their first experience being a truly remarkable milestone in death metal from a far-off corner of the world, proudly planting the Costa Rican flag in the underground’s conscious with a truly marvelous, menacing, and engrossing cut of excellence. Much like the chasmic, void-like vortex of grotesqueries on the cover art, this album will pull you into a pool of macabre oddities and never let you go… [text by Jørgen Sven Kirby, Nattskog webzine]

During the turbulent and uncertain years of 2020-2021, perhaps none were plunged deeper into darkness than those from down under as Australia imposed some of the strictest, harshest, and most devastating lockdown measures in the world, forcing their civilians into years of isolation. However, through solitude and desolation, some of the greatest art is created, as is the case with BLACK LAVA, the emerging blackened death metal quartet from Melbourne (AU). Founded by drummer Dan Presland (Vipassi, AMDBL, ex-Ne Obliviscaris) and guitarist Ben Boyle (Vipassi, AMDBL, Hadal Maw), BLACK LAVA draws influence from old school death and black metal bands while injecting groove-laden melodies and progressive elements to create their own experimental sound.

“The idea came about from just pure frustration of the situation at hand during 2020/2021,” explains Presland of the band’s formation. “Ben and I live locally together, and in the beginning of the pandemic, I built a working studio, so we got together to just initially jam to release some frustrations and vent some music around the second half of 2021. We had a pretty casual jam together and Ben came back with a few fleshed out ideas a few days later.” As the ideas started to come to fruition, the duo quickly realized that the project had more potential than just a jam session. “Both of us were really into the direction Ben pushed,” continues Presland, “and it was something pretty new to both of us – we have worked together quite extensively over the years within music, playing in several bands together (Vipassi, AMDBL, Aphotic Dawn and more) – so to go in a totally new direction was pretty refreshing.”

As the pair fleshed out more ideas, they turned to their good friend Rob Watkins of Blackhelm to fulfill vocal duties. “Within 10 minutes we had found a vocalist and the search for a bassist was on. Tim Anderson (Blackhelm) was found pretty quickly and was keen to jump on board the idea also, so within a very short time frame we had a full lineup, a record ready to go, and 4 guys full of enthusiasm to push something new.”

Sharing a diverse love for black metal, death metal, and progressive music, the quartet quickly found their sound and hit a stride. And thus, Soul Furnace was born – a searing 34-minute aural assault that conjures up nostalgia while still sounding fresh and current. While the record promises to usher in a new musical era of the 2020s with its forward-thinking and contemporary energy, the lyrics dwell somewhere between fantasy and the old world.

“In the world of Black Lava, the lyrics are set in a time and world long gone and forgotten, mostly made up of fantasy and a medieval theme, fitting for the realms of our style of music,” explains vocalist Rob Watkins of the album’s themes and inspirations. “We draw inspiration from the natural environment and mother nature, ancient witchcraft and the glory of warriors in battle. I picture Black Lava as visiting an ancient beast in a cave giving you a chance to escape the outside world through its tales and mythology.”

With a new deal with Season of Mist and a team of some of the music industry’s most revered artists, producers, engineers, and professionals behind them to help render their vision, Black Lava is ready to make its debut and unleash its fury upon the masses.

PUSTILENCE set release date for MEMENTO MORI / ROTTED LIFE debut, reveal first track

On April 24th internationally, Memento Mori in conspiracy with Rotted Life will release Pustilence‘s highly anticipated debut album, Beliefs of Dead Stargazers and Soothsayers, on CD and cassette tape/digital formats, respectively. Rotted Life will also release the vinyl version later in the year.

Hailing from Brisbane, Australia’s Pustilence formed in late 2018 and soon became a three-headed vermin that proudly brought forward mind-warping death metal madness of a most mid-’90s vintage. The band’s first public recording, 2020’s The Birth of the Beginning Before the Inception of the End, was a short & sweet 15-minute vortex of melted leads, impossible tempo changes, and truly putrid vocals. The EP suitably received various pressings by various labels, and showed Pustilence as worthy successors to the cult likes of Oppressor, Morta Skuld, Gutted, and Psychic Pawn.

Still, the best was yet to come, and now it arrives with their long-awaited full-length: Beliefs of Dead Stargazers and Soothsayers. With their lineup now expanded to a quartet, Pustilence proceed to obliterate past, present, and future. While bearing the same sturdy template as the preceding EP, Pustilence‘s debut album explodes and expands in every direction: leads are even more melted and madness-inducing, the tempo changes are crazier and more slamming, the vocals gurgle with supernatural clarity, and their songwriting on the whole bristles with an excitement and electricity that’s rare these days. Granted, it’s staunchly and unapologetically DEATH METAL – and those very same cult names are still invoked – but Pustilence put just the right amount of uniqueness to their dread creations that makes the whole 11-song/46-minute work plausible and reverential. Further, the band more fully flesh out their fantastical and obscured lyrical themes, bringing form and content together with alchemical ease. Which is to say nothing of the absolutely amazing production here: CRUSHING yet clear, each instrument rendered in 3D tones but never sacrificing the inherent rawness of true human performance. No typewriter or popcorn bullshit here – just classic, effortlessly old-school death metal that adds to the glorious tradition rather than lazily picks at its bones.

From caveman breakdowns to rude angularity, haunting half-melodies to blunt force trauma, Pustilence prepare to take the death metal underground by literal storm with Beliefs of Dead Stargazers and Soothsayers.

In the meantime, hear the brand-new track “Outwith the Plains of Ultimatum” here:

When it comes to straight-forward, bone-crushing death metal, Tokyo’s DEFILED delivers! ‘The Highest Level’ stays true to the traditional death metal formula, while the band’s gritty songwriting approach lends to its authenticity. DEFILED attempts to make no frills with this new full-length, instead speaking directly to the sensibility of old school death metal fanatics who are simply looking for some face-melting violence!

The early 90s was a crucial and formative time for death metal, a genre that started to predominantly emerge in the west with bands like Decide, Cannibal Corpse, Autopsy, Obituary, and Morbid Angel having a stronghold on America while Entombed, Cadaver, Carcass, and many others started to make waves in Europe and the U.K. But across the vast Pacific Ocean, DEFILED was taking a cue from its peers and became one of Asia’s leading purveyors during the genre’s early inception.

Upon releasing a series of demos and EPs during the mid-90s, the Japanese powerhouse finally released its first full-length, ‘Erupted Wrath,’ via Nightfall Records. Upon its release, the band broke out of Asia and started to make its debut in America across the extreme metal fest circuit – performing twice at Milwaukee Metal Fest as well as appearing at November to Dismember in Texas.

The band kept busy during the turn of the century while continuing to build their profile and dominate metal audiences around the globe and by 2003, they formed a union with Season of Mist, where the band has become one of the label’s most consistent death metal mainstays. Since then, the band has released six full-length albums, the majority of which are under the Season of Mist banner.

As the band celebrates thirty years since its legacy was formed, they are ready to unleash another pummelling offering onto the masses. ‘The Highest Level’ still carries the same time-tested formula that Defiled established three decades ago, remaining true to their identity, and still carrying the torch as one of the genre’s founding fathers.

KAAL NAGINI set release date for IRON BONEHEAD debut EP, reveal first track

Today, Iron Bonehead Productions announces April 14th as the international release date for Kaal Nagini‘s striking debut EP, Refracted Lights of a Blind God, on CD and 12″ vinyl formats.

Hailing from Kolkata, Kaal Nagini are a vital new entity among India’s ever-rising extreme metal underground, for which Iron Bonehead has helped foster through the likes of Tetragrammacide, Aparthiva Raktadhara, Brahmastrika, and Necrodeity. As such, Kaal Nagini are among the Kolkata Inner Order in a percussive alliance with MVOQH, an esteemed figure from the Siamese Underground.

Cruel and martial and overwhelming, Kaal Nagini‘s death metal aims for oblivion and promptly delivers the listener there – if they can even withstand the immediate barrage of nuclear-warped decibels the power-trio so effortlessly unload. Refracted Lights of a Blind God, the band’s first public recording, comprises four massive tracks across 17 minutes of unchained & unrestrained ultraviolence. With universal adversarial syncretism as their lyrical muse, Kaal Nagini distort and disorient perceptions of what “death metal” is and can be. Never devolving into pure noise nor afraid to overload frequencies to their maximalist limit, these undulating vortexes reveal rude shapes and impossible angles, but ones not without purpose: the glorification of Kali, and the emergence and idiosyncratic sound of Kalikshetra

And this is but the opening arsenal of Kaal Nagini. Offer obeisance or prepare to be mowed down by these Refracted Lights of a Blind God.

Get mowed down by the brand-new title track “Refracted Lights of a Blind God” here:

Formed in 2009, Bodyfarm began life as an old-school, classics-oriented death metal band. Today, they are performing with a new, solid four-member formation with a bit more black metal influence than in the beginning. Although their lineup changed a lot over the years – mainly, because of the tragical loss of founder Thomas Wouters in 2019 as well as the amicable parting of longtime drummer Quint Meerbeek – Bodyfarm are as committed as ever to their core ethics.

Some of the band’s highlights to date have been playing on the 70000 Tons Of Metal festival cruise, touring Europe with Death To All, and performing at such big German summer festivals as Party.San and Summer Breeze. With their current lineup in place, Bodyfarm have the ambition to be a much more active part of these kinds of events in the future.

Now, with the imminent arrival of Ultimate Abomination, Bodyfarm are poised to assert, once and for all, their domination over the death metal scene. The arrangements for the upcoming album were mostly written by founding guitarist Bram Hilhorst and bassist-turned-fellow-guitarist Alex Seegers, with the lyrics written by vocalist/bassist Ralph de Boer and drums by new arrival David Schermann. Naturally, every member contributed his own part to Ultimate Abomination, keeping the album fresh yet firmly within the core Bodyfarm sound. The result sees a surprising infusion of catchiness and The Groove: be it galloping like the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, stomping slowly across the skulls of enemies, or rolling forward across the battlefield called life, Ultimate Abomination is a death metal maniac’s wet dream.

Lyrically, Ultimate Abomination focuses on psychological warfare. “Views from a violent and devastating psychological sight from the dark depths of our minds and human behavior,” expounds Hilhorst. “You can parallel it to ‘wars in the battlefield of life itself.’ The songs are all stories in themselves, but all relate to this subject.” Thus, the title Ultimate Abomination is an apt summary of all the lyrics written by de Boer for the album.

Part and parcel with Bodyfarm’s stellar songwriting across Ultimate Abomination is the album’s absolutely CRUSHING production: very “live” and full-blooded, but polished just enough to exude maximum professionalism. Recording-wise, the drums for Ultimate Abomination were recorded by J.B. van der Wal at Soundlodge Studios, and the other instruments and vocals by the band at Studio Hilhorst. Mixing and mastering was done by Project Zero studios Belgium.

“We listen to different kinds of music in our genre, and this is also recognizable in the new songs,” Hilhorst continues. “The diversity of tempos and atmosphere is quite big. Old-school death ‘n’ roll to blackened death riffing, it’s all there, and we think the combination of it makes a unique sound.”

THE GRIFTED set release date for PERSONAL RECORDS debut, reveal first track – features members of MR. DEATH, TIAMAT, TREBLINKA, GRAND CADAVER+++

On April 7th internationally, Personal Records is proud to present The Grifted‘s highly anticipated debut album, Doomsday & Salvation, on CD format.

The Grifted are a Swedish death metal that stays true to the sound of the early ’90s. That being said and with an advantage from other bands doing this, is that they lived and breathed this at that time in bands like Treblinka, Tiamat, Septic Grave, and later Mr. Death. They also recorded their debut album, Doomsday & Salvation, at the esteemed Sunlight Studios with Tomas Skögsberg, so not only can you expect an era-authentic experience, you’ll get that exquisitely filthy & meaty production that’s made the studio so legendary.

More specifically, The Grifted is an old constellation under a new name. Some of the members have a history that goes back to the beginning of the evilution of the Stockholm death metal scene; maybe we could think about the “death of the fittest,” as it were. We’re talking about when the scene was still in its embryonic stages and solely consisted of 15-20 skinny kids in their mid-teens.

Jörgen Thullberg and Stefan Lagergren joined up 35 years ago in the band Treblinka, who later became Tiamat. After decades apart, Jörgen teamed up with Jonas Ohlsson, a low-key drummer from the northernmost part of Sweden, and became part of forming Mr. Death. Possibly with absolutely no scientific source or evidence, Jonas Ohlson is the first person in world history to play drums on a death metal demo recorded above the arctic circle – a feat difficult to copy since his hometown no longer exists and is completely leveled out. Like in the film Deliverance, you build a lifelong connection with everybody from the same bloodline, and when getting the chance to be creative together, the product is something more stunning than a death-like experience.

Joakim Lindström, the hardcoreish singer from PhotoParade – his and Jörgen’s former hardcore/punk band – soon joined and time-warped back to his origins as a death metal musician. Stefan joined Mr. Death around 2008 after a one-time Treblinka reunion gig. In 2012, Staffan Skoglund joined the nowadays-not-so-young band, and they continued in their old-men routine. Mr. Death got back to their initial state where rehearsing, writing songs, and doing some occasional live shows became their drill.

After a couple of years, the music and band dynamic had evolved, and Mr. Death changed their name to The Grifted. You could say that they grew out of their old suits and had to shape up. The music is more complex, without losing the punkish old-school death metal feeling. It would not be very surprising if someone claims or makes a remark that these guys have one foot in the grave, one foot in the old-school scene, and one foot in present times. Either way you call it, The Grifted offer Doomsday & Salvation in bountiful supply…if Hell was such a bad place, then it would be cold down there!

In the meantime, hear the brand-new track “Fractured” here:

ASTRIFEROUS set release date for ME SACO UN OJO / PULVERISED debut album, reveal first track

Today, Me Saco Un Ojo Records and Pulverised Records announce March 10th as the international release date for Astriferous‘ highly anticipated debut album, Pulsations From the Black Orb. Me Saco Un Ojo will handle the vinyl version while Pulverised will handle the CD version.

Much like the chasmic, void-like vortex of grotesqueries on the cover art, this album will pull you into a pool of macabre oddities and never let you go… [text by Jørgen Sven Kirby, Nattskog webzine

Set for international release on January 27th as a joint release between Me Saco Un Ojo Records and Pulverised Records – Me Saco Un Ojo will handle the vinyl version while Pulverised will handle the CD version – hear Sonic Poison‘s Eruption in its entirety here:

Do you like grinding death metal mayhem? Do you like high speeds and higher brutality? Sonic Poison play mental music for the sick and disturbed: extreme tempos, scathingly evil riffs, blasting drums, and morbid vocals to torment even the most hopeless patients. Those who heard their EP/split/demo releases will know they are in for a ride while the album gives 20 minutes of sharp sonic artillery, far more than ever before. This might even be their most barbaric material to date, as hyper-driven death-noise erupts from every orifice with spasms of hatred.

Although many of the songs sit at around one minute, this is for your own safety. Each is so intensely malicious and sadistic, more would kill you. In fact, listening to the entire record is not suggested for the weak. Those who want to be crushed, devoured, and spewed into the poison pools of putridity, grab this record and crank it loud – guaranteed to get your neighbors unhappy and alienate any friends who aren’t total maniacs (time to cut the fat). The production is suitably old-sounding, with rumbling bass and crispy guitars to peel the skin as the drums bludgeon the bones. As lovely as this all sounds, we mustn’t forget the vocals, which will suck the marrow, soul, and gristle from your twitching carcass. All this in under 20 minutes? Fuck around and find out! OBSCURIAL sign with MEMENTO MORI, prepare second album

In their endless quest to push and support current underground acts that perpetuate the odor of vintage death metal, Memento Mori are extremely thrilled to announce a new signing: Obscurial, from Malaysia.

Obscurial is one of the most promising, up-and-coming death metal bands from Asia, being spawned in the sewers of K-Hell (Kuala Lumpur) back in 2019 and breaking into the local underground scene with Exaltation, their debut 2020 demo. Funeral, Burial and Rites, the band’s opera prima in full-length format, was self-released in December 2021, helping them obtain more recognition and following in the underground death metal community. Obscurial‘s approach to timeless death metal includes gut-wrenching riffs, somber melodies, and a dismal atmosphere influenced by the likes of Brain Dead, Grave Miasma, Morbid Angel, Bloodbath, Incantation, Dismember, Deicide, Grave, and Soulside Journey-era Darkthrone.

Memento Mori will unleash the CD version of their second full-length during the first half of 2024. Further details to follow in the coming months. For more info, consult the links below.
