Interview with Spanish Doom / Death Band Evadne

This week we spoke with Spanish Doom/ Death veterans Evadne – read on

  • First of congrats on the new album – anyone who has been in a band knows how hard it is to keep it going you guys have been going for nearly 20 years now – what is your secret?

PASSION, I THINK THERE IS NO MORE SECRETS IN THIS WORLD.

  • I love the artwork for Dethroned Of Our Souls who came up with that? What’s the story behind the art?

WE WANTED TO MIX THE ART COVER OF OUR FIRST DEMO WITH ART COVER OF THE E.P “DETHRONED OF LIGHT”, THE ARTISTIC RESULT WAS FROM THE COVER DESIGNER (VLADIMIR PROKOFIEV). IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL RESULT

  • Lyrically what inspires your guys?

EVERY THING. NOT JUST ANY KIND OF ARTISTIC EXPRESSION. ALSO FEELINGS, LANDSCAPES, PERSONAL SITUATIONS. IN ART EVERYTHING IS VALID

  • How did you guys get into heavy music were you death metal fans before becoming doom metal fans? What were the bands that lead you on this journey?

OF COURSE, WHEN WE START LISTENING METAL MUSIC THE DOOM METAL STYLE DIDN’T HAVE THE SOUND THAT HAS INFLUENCED US. AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 90’S SOME BANDS START TO DO A NEW MUSIC THAT REALLY HYPNOTIZES US. BANDS LIKE ANATHEMA, PARADISE LOST, MY DYING BRIDE, KATATONIA, THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE AND A GREAT SOURCE OF INSPIRATION FOR US.

  • I imagine the Spanish scene as being more death and black metal bands than doom – how are you guys received in Spain?

HERE THE THINGS ARE COMPLICATED, ALTHOUGT FOR THE BLACK AND DEATH METAL BANDS. HERE THE PEOPLE PREFER TO LISTEN HEAVY, ROCK FOLK METAL AND OTHER TYPES OF METAL

  • Is Spain your best place to play or are you better received in other European territories? If so which ones?

IN THE CENTER –WEST EUROPE THERE ARE MORE CULTURE OF EXTREME MUSIC, WE PREFER TO PLAY THERE. IN THIS PLACES THE PEOPLE GO TO CONCERTS OF DOOM METAL, IT’S A FACT.

  • I know you guys have done a decent amount of touring over the years – what’s been your best and worst gig so far and why?

THE BEST IS COMPLICATED TO DECIDE, WE HAVE PLAYED IN GREAT FESTIVALS LIKE:

FROM DUSK TILL DOOM IN BELGIUM, MADRID IS THE DARK (SPAIN), DUTCH DOOM DAYS (HOLLAND), MALTA DOOM FESTIVAL, HARD ROCK LAAGER (ESTONIA), AUTUMN SOULS OF SOFIA (BULGARIA), DARK SESSIONS IN ROMANIA, DOOM HEART FEST (ITALY), AND MANY MORE. WE CAN’T CHOOSE CAUSE THERE ARE ALWAYS FUNNY AND FUN EXPERIENCES. SOME DIFFICULT EXPERIENCE BUT NOTHING TOO BAD…SOMETIMES WE HAVE LOST FLIGHTS, THE LONG HOURS OF TRAVELING ON THE ROAD ARE THE WORST PART BUT WE ARE FUN PEOPLE AND WE HAD A GOOD TIME.

  • Have you played any American concerts to date? If not any plans to tour the USA?

NOT FOR THE MOMENT, WE WERE CLOSE TO GO BUT AT THE END WAS NOT POSSIBLE, HOPE WE CAN GO SOON AND MEET ALL OUR AMERICAN FRIENDS.

  • Has any of the band members ever visited the USA if so what did you think of it?

NOT FOR THE MOMENT. WE HOPE TO DO IT.

  • What can we expect from the band in 2020?

WE ARE IMMERSED IN THE CREATION OF NEW SONGS FOR THE NEXT ALBUM AND WE HAVE SOME GIGS FOR THE SECOND PART OF OUR IBERIAN TOUR (SPAIN)

  • Any final words?

THANK YOU FOR THE INTERVIEW AND THANK YOU TO THE READERS WHO TAKE THEIR TIME TO READ IT. STAY DOOM!

The foundation has now been laid… And the remaining instruments and vocals are set to be recorded during the next couple of weeks in our trusty Project Zero Studio. Be prepared for our second offering of unrelenting death metal madness!”

Embrace the new death metal overlords with their death metal offering, ‘Chapel of Abhorrence’!

CARNATION equals blistering death metal madness from Belgium. Early 2013, guitar player Jonathan Verstrepen created the band to show his appreciation for the old school death metal legends from the ‘80s & early ‘90s. Vocalist Simon Duson, bass player Yarne Heylen, guitar player Bert Vervoort, and drummer Vincent Verstrepen were summoned to complete the band, and it didn’t take long until the chemistry between this quintet to hit critical mass.

2015 marks the year that the first offering entitled ‘Cemetery of the Insane’ was released upon the masses. Tracks such as “Explosive Cadavers” or “The Rituals of Flesh” take you back in time to the better days of shredding riffs, neck-breaking drums, and skull-crushing guttural vocals.

The live rituals that followed were executed with stone cold merciless aggression. CARNATION delivered their bloodbath at select festivals across Europe during 2015 and 2016. Their next journey led them to distant Asia for their first tour across mainland Japan. This resulted in the infamous ‘Live at Asakusa Deathfest’ recording (2017). These releases, combined with their reputation as a notoriously impressive live act, drew the attention of fans worldwide and provided CARNATION with the opportunity to perform at several European festivals and saw the band touring alongside PESTILENCE during their special Brazilian tour in April 2018.

With ‘Chapel of Abhorrence’, CARNATION welcome you to death’s domain and invite you to witness them rise to their throne! www.carnationband.com

VALDRIN finish new BLOOD HARVEST album, reveal cover and tracklisting

Black/death mavericks Valdrin have completed their highly anticipated third album, Effigy of Nightmares, which will be released later this spring via Blood Harvest Records. Additionally, the cover artwork & tracklisting to Effigy of Nightmares have been revealed, which follow further below.

A statement from founding vocalist/guitarist Carter Hicks is as follows: “Effigy of Nightmares, like our previous album Two Carrion Talismans, centers around the antagonist of our Mythos: Nex Animus. The story chronicles the tour of a nameless narrator through the halls of Hosptium Mortis, the nightmare hospital below the Orcus underworld itself, where Nex tortures and lobotomizes the dissident gods of his domain.”

Continuing, he says, “We as the vessels of the Ausadjur Mythos have chosen this short and concise musical observation of Nex’s supreme power to be the final tale in the Orcus realm. In the future, we will return to the story of Valdrin Ausadjur, and continue after the events of Beyond The Forest.”

One of the metal underground’s best-kept secrets, Valdrin self-released their debut album, Beyond the Forest, in 2013. A year later, the now-defunct Blast Head Records re-released the album, and between the two editions, the band gained a good amount of momentum. But it was 2018’s Two Carrion Talismans, released by new label home Blood Harvest, where Valdrin reaped widespread acclaim, and for good reason: their epic, shapeshifting blackened death was both timeless and exceptionally fresh, imparting masterful songwriting amidst impassioned playing. And, blackening their attack yet further, the band’s forthcoming Effigy of Nightmares looks set to eclipse that grand achievement…

Release date and preorder info for Valdrin‘s Effigy of Nightmares to be announced shortly.

In the meantime, cover art – courtesy of Lucas Ruggieri, with layout by Anton Escobar – and tracklisting are as follows:

ANTHROPOPHAGOUS set release date for BLOOD HARVEST debut EP – fully streaming now

Today, Blood Harvest Records sets March 13th as the international release date for the striking debut EP of America’s AnthropophagousSpoiled Marrow, on 7″ vinyl format.

Anthropophagous hail from the frozen, festering wastes of western Massachusetts. Lying in wait, simmering in obscurity before the opportune moment to strike, the four-song Spoiled Marrow announces Anthropophagous‘ arrival with total and utter rudeness ‘n’ crudeness. A new entity they may be, but Anthropophagous harken back to the ancient forebears of evil – think the likes of earliest Incantation, Grotesque (Sweden), Sadistic Intent, Nuclear Death, and Necrovore – delivering devastating, to-the-point DEATH METAL with no frills, no gimmicks, and no synthesizers: only the evilest, heaviest sensations rendered without mercy. Neither retro nor resolutely primitivist, Anthropophagous‘ barbaric onslaught slices away any niceties or approachability of nowadays “death metal,” leaving only the husk of ghastly, gestating EVIL and pounding it into submission. Burning leather and steel for the lizard brain – partake of Spoiled Marrow or perish!

Fully partake by streaming Spoiled Marrow in its entirety here:

VIOLENT HAMMER reveal first track from forthcoming HELLS HEADBANGERS debut – also cover art, tracklisting

Today, Finnish defilers Violent Hammer reveal the new track “(Trapped) in Depths.” The track is the first to be revealed from the band’s long-awaited debut album, Riders of the Wasteland, which will see release this spring via Hells Headbangers on CD and vinyl LP formats.

Hear Violent Hammer‘s “(Trapped) in Depths” HERE:
Hailing from the ever-fertile Finnish black/death underground, Violent Hammer formed in 2006. Two demos followed in short succession, in 2006 and 2007, before the band would go on hiatus. Violent Hammer would at last return in early 2014 with a new lineup and a new demo, More Victims – Demo 2014, which Shadow Kingdom would release on cassette later that year. Then, another hiatus…

However rough ‘n’ rowdy those earlier demos may have been, the reinvigorated Violent Hammer return with a full-length that handily trounces those not-inconsiderable predecessors. Aptly titled Riders of the Wasteland, Violent Hammer‘s debut album encompasses their simple yet scintillating aesthetic – the full span of death metal and black metal from the ’80s through early ’90s, early thrash, and most significantly early grindcore and UK/Swedish hardcore and crust from the ’80s – and blasts it into oblivion with the aplomb of a nuclear fallout. Unremittingly hammering and remorselessly primitive, each of the nine barbaric slabs of song across the album’s satisfyingly swift 26 minutes gets in, gets out, and fucking DESTROYS. As such, Riders of the Wasteland is deceptively catchy, much like so much ’80s grindcore was, and retains a twisted sense of fun within its gnarled ‘n’ gnarling sonics. And although Violent Hammer here invoke many names – from early Blood, Profanatica, Bestial Summoning, and Naked Whipper to likewise early Doom (UK), Extreme Noise Terror, Mob 47, and even earliest/crustiest Bolt Thrower and Napalm Death – the manner in which they slice and dice all these influences bespeaks an identity wholly unique in today’s underground landscape.

Release date and preorder info to be announced shortly.
Cover and tracklisting are as follows:
Violent Hammer’s Riders of the Wasteland
1. Annihilation (Victims of Bomb Raid)
2. Death Squad
3. Wasted Through Life
4. Screams of Agony
5. Riders of the Wasteland
6. (Trapped) in Depths
8. House of Beria
9. Bratva

Chilean death metal duo Coffin Curse premiere the new track Grave Offender

Today, Chilean death metal duo Coffin Curse premiere the new track “Grave Offender” .
The track hails from the band’s striking debut album, Ceased to Be, set for international release on January 27th via Memento Mori. Hear Coffin Curse‘s “Grave Offender” in its entirety here:
Coffin Curse was thrown into this worthless world in Santiago in mid-2012, as a side-project of the main band Inanna, to spawn and vomit forth death metal in its purest form. Max Neira (guitars, bass, vocals) conceived this beast as a two-piece squad to explore the caverns of everlasting pain and horror. Musically, this is malevolent, straightforward, headbang-inducing death metal, inspired by early ’90s U.S. icons such as Morbid Angel, Monstrosity, Obituary, Immolation, or Deicide, plus the vicious vibe from the founding fathers such as Pentagram (Chile), Death, Possessed, Sepultura, Massacre, Slaughter Lord, Necrovore, etc.

There’s no blind allegiance nor messages to anyone; no dogmatic, religious, or cult preaching. Coffin Curse verses are just focused on the multiple facets of death in all its shapes. Spiritually, physically, morally, mentally, metaphysically; evil, madness, multiple perversions, violence, hatred, and despair – all that in communion within the endless confines of the human psyche.

From 2012 up until 2018, Coffin Curse have insulted the planet with one demo, three EPs, and one split effort, and now Max Neira along with Carlos Fuentes (drums) are ready to spit out the band’s debut album, Ceased to Be, which will be their biggest insult to the planet yet. Classic and crushing, Coffin Curse here unload a barrage of timeless DEATH METAL in a most late-’80s mold: a time, it must be said (or at least repeated once again!), when “songwriting” and “death metal” weren’t mutually exclusive terms. No riff salads, no jock jams, no gore-overload masking a dearth of ideas – rather, taut ‘n’ terrorizing memorability pumped full of catchy-as-the-clap riffs, haunting-the-chapel leads, and pro but not-too-polished production that only heightens the dark depths these Chileans plumb so powerfully. We’d deign to call it “classy,” even, but this is fucking death metal after all!

With suitably Classic Death Metal cover artwork courtesy of Daniel Hermosilla (Nox Fragor Art) and climaxing with the nine-minute epic “Deep in Streams of Purifying Dirt,” Coffin Curse crush graves and dreams alike with Ceased to Be!

Aforementioned cover art and tracklisting are as follows:
Tracklisting for Coffin Curse’s Ceased to Be
1. Gathered unto Death
2. Where Sickness Thrives
3. Chopped Clean Off
4. Descend into Abhorrence
5. Feeding on Perpetual Disgrace
6. Extinct
7. Grave Offender
8. Deep in Streams of Purifying Dirt

Italy’s VALGRIND sign with MEMENTO MORI – to release fourth album later this year

In their endless quest to push and support current underground acts that perpetuate the odor of vintage death metal, Memento Mori are extremely thrilled to announce a new signing: Valgrind, from Italy.   Valgrind was born from the ashes of the ultra-underground act Necrospell in 1993, as a death/black metal project with both extreme and melodic influences. Over the following years, the band released four demos and developed its own style, combining the main influences (Morbid Angel, Pestilence, Death, Nocturnus, Possessed, Monstrosity, Immolation) with a passion for the epically dark atmospheres of bands like Candlemass and early Paradise Lost.

Disbanded in 2003, the strong will to return on stage of both founding member / main songwriter Massimiliano Elia and vocalist Daniele Lupidi (also frontman of Hateful) made Valgrind‘s return possible in 2008. With the addition of new motivated members, the band released their debut full-length, Morning Will Come No More, in 2012. The album contained almost one hour of classic death metal filled with killer solos, memorable riffs and obscure vocals. Following the release, a series of shows were held in Italy, Germany, Holland, and Sweden. In 2016, the band delivered their sophomore full-length, Speech of the Flame, via Lord of the Flies Records. The music strayed away from some of the early influences to become more personal, while the lyrical concept dealt with the darkest sides of the ancient Mediterranean civilizations. An EP called Seal of Phobos followed in 2017, and only one year later, Valgrind delivered their third full-length, their most ambitious work to date, on Everlasting Spew Records. Blackest Horizon saw an increasing level of technicality in the guitar department, while retaining the old-school vibe of the previous works. Vocals became less guttural and more aggressive, while a more organic production gave the listener a wider musical spectrum to dive into. Again, the public was introduced to the new songs in some memorable shows, including Helsinki Deathfest in 2018.

Valgrind entered the studio in mid-2019 to record their fourth full-length. Lyrical inspiration for this new chapter comes from the myths of legendary creatures and beasts in various ancient cultures. Expect yet another lethal dose of old-school death metal with a unique touch!   Memento Mori will release the CD version of Valgrind‘s fourth full-length in late 2020 / early 2021. Further details to follow in the coming months.

BLOOD SPORE set release date for BLOOD HARVEST debut EP, reveal first track

Today, Blood Harvest Records sets February 28th, 2020 as the international release date for Blood Spore‘s striking debut EP, Fungal Warfare Upon All Life, on CD, 12″ vinyl, and cassette tape formats.

Blood Spore are a four-piece extreme metal act that spawned in Philadelphia in the human year 2018. The band came together under the unifying vision of the ancient, immortal, conscious fungal mass that is hellbent on consuming and repurposing all life that roosts upon the Earth.

With almost preternatural ease, Blood Spore combine pummeling death metal with somatic doom, chaotic black metal, and malevolently more to create a highly dynamic, ever-evil sound to stomp on rotted skulls to. In just one year, the band made several vicious offerings upon the stage supporting their initially self-released debut EP Fungal Warfare Upon All Life. So impressed by that EP, Blood Harvest  simply had to release it on a worldwide scale.

Now aligning forces with Blood Harvest  – seemingly, a match made in Hell – Blood Spore will release their imminent debut album through the label in the coming year. In the meantime, they continue to lure swaths of humans to the fungal altar with an alluring trance soaked in death. Pulling influence from science fiction and mycology, Blood Spore paint horrifying images of the impending assault on the living with poisonous tendrils dripping with infected blood. Fungal Warfare Upon All Life is just the start – beware!

In the meantime, hear the track “Hostile Fruiting Bodies” here:

Monolithic black/death cult Witchbones stream new Iron Bonehead album

Today, monolithic black/death cult Witchbones stream the entirety of their highly anticipated second album, The Seas of Draugen. Set for international release on December 6th via Iron Bonehead Productions, hear WitchbonesThe Seas of Draugen in its entirety here:
Hailing from Portland, Oregon, just last year did Witchbones form but soon began an onslaught of dark ‘n’ devastating short-lengths. At the beginning of 2019 alone, mainman Vardlokker released two EPs a month apart – Akasha and Entropy Rite, respectively, through Witchbones‘ Bandcamp – and right behind it, the aptly titled debut album We Haunt Ourselves. More momentum continued with the Akasha II The Lost Demos compilation and then another EP, The Mirror Effect, slated for Halloween.

But, like a man possessed, Vardlokker aligns himself with Iron Bonehead to unleash Witchbones‘ densest and most penetrating recording yet, The Seas of Draugen. Like its aquatic, mythological namesake, here does Vardlokker drown the listener in wave after wave of shuddering, shivering horror that looks and sounds and feels very much like familiar bestial black/death, but is instead uniquely imbued with a wandering, amorphous atmosphere that creates a truly unsettling tension. Crushing but cast away, doomed to solitude and one’s own internal destruction, the literally massive, ever-so-slowly-roiling maelstrom Witchbones conjures forth is echoed within the thematic arc of The Seas of Draugen itself: setting sail with “The Nun Collector,” taking in a “Nebulous Ghost Ship” later on, and sending that listener to the torrid depths, that veritable Davy Jones’ Locker of the soul & spirit, with the concluding trifecta of “The Ritual Continues (We Haunt Ourselves),” “At the Shores (Draugen’s Revenge),” and “The Candle Burns Alone (Dead Sailors).”

Smothered by the sea, ravaged by bestial frequency, DOOM assuredly and austerely spelled out either way, Witchbones commits you to the gravest depths of The Seas of Draugen.
Cover and tracklisting are as follows:
Tracklisting for Witchbones’ The Seas of Draugen
1. The Nun Collector
2. Whispering Martyr
3. The Seas of Draugen
4. Nebulous Ghost Ship
5. The Ritual Continues (We Haunt Ourselves)
