When Abbath announced that he had left IMMORTAL, it sent massive shockwaves through the metal scene. The iconic frontman had long become the “face” of the Norwegian black scene, his image synonymous with the genre. Upon releasing his debut album with his eponymous new band, ABBATH, in 2016, trve fans were satiated with a dose of icy, blackened fury.

Now, the Norwegian giant returns for round two, armed with a refined lineup and ready to strike with a sophomore effort that is sure to once again exceed the expectations of Abbath’s loyal fanbase. ‘Outstrider’ sees a maturation in sound, delivering a tighter, well-rounded offering from the band as they come into their own identity.

While there are moments that certainly channel the frosty hallmarks of IMMORTAL, there is no danger of ABBATH repeating that formula. ABBATH draws from NWOBM and melodic influences, adding a fresh new flavor to the sound that the band’s founder came to define.

‘Oustrider’ consists of eight, crushing original songs and concludes with a fiery BATHORY cover. The album promises a full-on aural assault from start to finish with frigid riffage and a robust pocket that are layered with vocals from one of the most identifiable voices in black metal. If you thought ABBATH came in hot with their last record, just wait until you hear this!

FLUKT perform harsh and cold Norwegian Black Metal.

The music has clear reference to the oldschool Black Metal sound made infamous by the Norwegian Black Metal scene in the early 90s. The music has is aggressive and have a violent drive where the main focus is to create atmosphere.

The unique thing with Flukt is the way dynamics is approached. Even when the music is fast, and harsh. Flukt is never afraid to mellow things down in slower passages and more groove oriented songs.

DARKTHRONE RELEASE NEW TRACK “THE HARDSHIP OF THE SCOTS”

FENRIZ introduces the track There really isn’t just ONE song that can represent this album, THE HARDSHIP OF THE SCOTS was my song and although we also wanted one of Ted’s songs to preview the album Ted took one for the team and we chose my song! His songs are somewhat faster with more black metal in them but still has slow thrash and doom, my song here seems to start with an INVASION OF YOUR PRIVACY RATT-ERA riff or perhaps one from THE ULTIMATE SIN by Ozzy Osbourne but when I had bicycled my guitar from the Bombshelter and sat down on the porch to strum it, the fact is that (as far as I remember) this entire THE HARDSHIP OF THE SCOTS track was done in an hour and I remember texting Ted about it. Ted had just been around to collect loads of vinyl I was giving to him. Anyway, so as usual I didn’t have an elaborate scheme as to what the riffs where coming from, but like last album’s preview song I can tell you what it sounds like to me. This doesn’t mean I was inspired by what it sounds like, ok? So riff nr two has both normal doom and some evil death/black notes in the second part. Then there’s the break to make the song more linear (old 80s underground trick I used on the last album and this album) and then a riff emerges which I guess I would like to sound like that awesome break riff in an INFERNÖ track called thrash metal dogs of hell. 1:50 out in that track is one of my fave slow thrash metal riffs EVER and it kind of reminds me of first Exodus too. But my riff kinda went even slower and may remind more of a Celtic Frost tempo. I think it’s a splendid break and riff anyway and suddenly while I was playing my guitar, I came up with this final riff part which is not as primitive as we are used to but rather sounds like some more epic 20-year-old ENSLAVED or something. Anyway, that’s what it sounds like to me NOW but when I was making it, I was just jamming my guitar on the porch after having bicycled it home. SNAKES!!”

“The Hardship Of The Scots” is being launched ahead of release of OLD STAR to give fans a taster of what’s to come with their highly anticipated new studio album OLD STAR on May 31st on Peaceville.   The legendary Norwegian longstanding partnership of Fenriz and Ted “Nocturno Culto” Skjellum, return with Old Star, their first studio album since 2016’s hugely popular Arctic Thunder. With a mastery and endless dedication to the art of the riff, they cut through 6 new epic tracks, taking in the best of the old school of heavy & extreme metal plus a large dose of doom-laden riffing, & channelling it through the grime of the underground.

Fenriz enthuses «Old star – again we are here with THE RIFFS! A while after our previous ARCTIC THUNDER album it became apparent that we would continue in that same style, BLACK OLD HEAVY METAL with slow thrash, classic doom and slow death metal. As many have focussed on the 70s sound over the last 20 years, the mix on our new album has ended up being more 80s than ever. The songs are more metal than ever! Ted’s songs have alot of black metal in them, faster and slower but also doomier parts and reocurring parts. My songs are more linear written, it’s an ancient 80s underground trick, with breaks, all slow heavy or slow thrash, classic doom or slow death.»   He continues «All in all it is our most 80s album so far and our most metal one to date with drum sound typical for the 80s USA/German market and damned lyrics, which are all written by me. We feel that OLD STAR is the big brother of ARCTIC THUNDER. More solid and with even better riffs.»

Old Star was recorded at the band’s Necrohell 2 Studios, with engineering and production duties carried out by vocalist/guitarist Nocturno Culto, complemented with a perfectly organic mix courtesy of Sanford Parker (Voivod) at Hypercube Studios, & mastered once more by Jack Control at Enormous Door. The stellar cover artistry comes courtesy of Chadwick St John, titled “The Shepherd of the Deep”.   Over the course of 30 years, Norway’s Darkthrone has become a staple of the global black metal genre, forging a legacy as one of the most renowned and influential bands in its illustrious & often infamous history. In the formative years following their 1987 inception, Darkthrone initially started with a strong concoction of thrash & then death/doom metal experimentation, with broader musical influences spanning from the 60s to the 80s, before the debut album Soulside Journey was unleashed in 1991. Never ones to follow convention or stand still even then, the band soon embraced a much darker, more primitive form of expression with the now iconic second album A Blaze in the Northern Sky, & the rest became history.

NORDJEVEL reveal new video for “Amen Whores”

Today, Norwegian black metallers Nordjevel reveal the new video “Amen Whores.” The track hails from the band’s highly anticipated second album, Necrogenesis, set for international release on March 29th via Osmose Productions. See & hear Nordjevel’s “Amen Whores” video in its entirety HERE:

Nordjevel, whose self-titled debut album was released on Osmose Productions to great critical acclaim three years ago, are back with a vengeance with Necrogenesis, an album which sees the band’s core of founder and vocalist Doedsadmiral (Svartelder, Doedsvangr, Enepsigos) and bassist DzeptiCunt (ex-Ragnarok), being joined by Destruchtor (Myrkskog, ex-Morbid Angel) on guitars and backing vocals and Dominator (ex-Dark Funeral) on drums.

The new arrivals have enabled Nordjevel to expand its musical horizons and produce an album that promises to be more ferocious than its predecessor, as Doedsadmiral explains: “With the addition of Destruchtor and Dominator to the band’s lineup, Nordjevel has never been so strong. Necrogenesis is a much darker and violent album. It is also more varied and mature, both musically and lyrically. We definitely did not want to get stuck in a rut and churn out an identikit version of our debut, and fortunately, we all felt that we wanted to go in the same direction, so we were all able to work together extremely well on the new songs. Having said that, Necrogenesis was a hard bastard of an album to complete, and at times, we felt that the universe was conspiring against us, so it became a very personal album for all of us.”

To give fans a taste of what they can expect from Necrogenesis, Nordjevel have just released a new video for the track “Amen Whores,” which can be seen in its entirety HERE at Osmose Productions‘ official YouTube channel. Also see the previously revealed video for opening track “Sunset Glow” HERE, also at Osmose‘s official YouTube channel. “Sunset Glow” has also been released as a single, and can be streamed or downloaded HERE at Osmose‘s Bandcamp.

Necrogenesis is set to hit the streets on Osmose Productions on March 29th in CD Jewel Case, Limited Edition CD Digipack (with bonus track), Limited Edition Double Gatefold Vinyl in Blood Red (with bonus track), Limited Edition Double Gatefold Vinyl in Black (with bonus track), Digital, and Limited Edition Audio Tape formats. Preorder info can be found HERE.

Recorded at Velvet Recording in Spydeberg, Norway, Necrogenesis was engineered by Nordjevel and Christer Krogh, and mixed and mastered by Patric Darkhyrys at his WSL Studios in France. With artwork and layout by Vincent Fouquet of Above Chaos.

1349 discuss Munch inspired single “Dødskamp”

Norwegian black metallers 1349 recently unleashed  their new single “Dødskamp”. The song has been written for a project by the organizations Innovation Norway, Visit Norway and the Munch Museum, called ‘Munch + Music’. Four Norwegian artists within four different genres of music were asked to interpret their angle on a freely selected work by the famous painter Edvard Munch.

Find out what inspired 1349 by watching the video streaming on the website of Visit Norway.

1. Dødskamp (05:05)
2. Atomic Chapel (live) (06:54)
When 1349 rose from the ashes of ALVHEIM in 1997, the band was driven by a deep desire to keep the black metal flame burning in all its rebellious glory. The Norwegians set out with the declared aim to remain true to the original spirit of their scene, which they saw heading into all the wrong directions. Conceived around the founding members, which consisted of vocalist and first drummer Ravn, guitarist Tjalve, and Seidemann on bass, 1349 completed their line-up with the addition of guitarist Archaon in 1999 and SATYRICON drum-legend Frost, after the latter recorded a demo and the debut album with the band in 2001. When their debut ‘Liberation’ was finally unleashed in 2003, 1349 took the world by storm with their intense blend of old school black metal soundscapes and ultra-fast aggression. Further assaults followed in rapid succession. ‘Beyond the Apocalypse’ (2004) and ‘Hellfire’ (2005) cemented the Norwegians’ reputation as one of the strongest acts in the already peaked scene, where they managed to carve out a claim for their own. Founding member Tjalve decided to focus on his band PANTHEON I and 1349 have since continued as a four-piece – occasionally adding renowned guest guitarists. Extensive touring aided the growth of a massive following, which started to seriously reach across the Atlantic, when 1349 opened for reunited metal legends Celtic Frost in North America in 2006. In an impressive demonstration that dedication to the origins and early principles of black metal does not have to mean nostalgia and stagnation, 1349 considerably widened their sonic palette with the next full-length ‘Revelations of the Black Flame’ (2009), which was co-mixed by iconic CELTIC FROST mastermind Tom Gabriel “Warrior” Fischer. Their newly found darker and more ambient side, was further explored and interwoven with the earlier sonic approach, which 1349 dub “aural hellfire” on the following ‘Demonoir’ (2010). Extensive touring and performances at prestigious festivals around the globe filled the period from 2010 to 2012. ‘Massive Cauldron of Chaos’ (2013) was the next milestone in the Norwegian’s merciless advance, scoring excellent reviews and sparking more festival shows as well as extended touring, which also brought 1349 for the first time to Australia and New Zealand. Now the band is preparing to unleash more “aural hellfire” onto the expecting world via Season of Mist.
